^^ I would add if an OC/DC leaves as well.

Portal would have likely been OK if original 2018 "no permission required" rule left alone. Covid era rule changes suck and not much can be done with NIL.

Values...cheating, bribery, and lying...sound values on which to run collegiate sports.

I see nothing wrong with either. Why shouldn’t an athlete be able to make money if someone is offering? Any other college student can
Transfer policy policy is good too. It stops coaches from being able to lie to the recruits about playing time and then sit them for 2-3 years aka Saban.
Yes but can and will be abused but it allows the people not making millions to have some control finally

Portal easy

Kids get benched and immediately start looking at schools

Sitting out a year makes them not be so irrational and learn a lesson to work hard to try to win their job back

The portal is the bigger issue. Every player is a free agent every year. Need eligibility penalties for transferring like they used to. It’d be a much bigger barrier to keep good players from transferring to the highest bidder and it’d keep bids lower bc the best players will still go to the draft as soon as they’re allowed to, but losing a year of eligibility before that makes them worth much less NIL money, therefore smaller offers and fewer offers equals more top players staying put.

On balance I think LSU has benefited from both.

I don’t mind the craziness of the portal/NIL so far. Seemingly creating more parity as messy as it is.

You haven't even defined the "issue" your question pre-supposes. What are you alleging is wrong that needs to be put right?

One issue that can be corrected is the transfer portal. That needs addressed.
More vagueness. What issues? Address what?

LSU is crushing at both. That is why I love both. I don’t think Kelly has any misses so far in the portal.

Get rid of both and have no issues. Go back to a player that transfers must sit out a year before playing. That would cut out this portal BS.

I guess the portal is ultimately worse but the combo is tough for any team hoping to build quality depth

It’s never going back. The NCAA got sued so many times over transfer rules they just finally said frick it. I do believe there will be some type of NFL type of trade/transfer policy.

The biggest issue is the lack of rules, parameters, or any kind of oversight when it comes to either -- nothing to stop schools from recruiting players from other programs before they hit the portal then using the portal to smoothly transfer. Nothing to stop schools from just buying recruiting classes. Nothing to stop NIL sponsors from backing out or failing to deposit on deals. Nothing to promise players from taking money and never following through with their end of the contract.

I think the transfer portal is more of a game changer though. Just look through the last 3-4 years of playoff teams and see how many had transfer QBs. It's only gonna keep continue booming and as is usually the case when there's an economic boom, the biggest result is the rich get richer.

I think the issue is the combination of both the NIL AND the portal.

Take Mekhi Wingo, he wasn't going to sit. He was a starter on an SEC team. He's now a starter on a better SEC team. He came here to chase a title and make (more) money. Good business decision, but we only like it because we're at the top of the food chain.

NIL is no big deal that has always been done under the table anyway (Bama Bag man). There needs to be transfer portal regulation. It is not sustainable to have to players transfer every year. The NFL has multi-year contracts and restricted free agency. 1. Players should have only one transfer...period. If you chose poorly live with it. 2. You have to stay at a school for at least 2 years.
