I know hindsight is 20/20 but Why not start Coleman, Hellmers, ACK?

I see everyone discussing putting in Jump in the 9th and the missed fly, but I feel like we lost this game in the 1st

They had 2 runs going into the 9th. You take that every time.

We failed at the plate and on a pop fly.

You’re half right. The pop up had no bearing on the game. Giving up three runs in nine innings but putting up 7 straight scoreless innings is where the game was lost. Jay Johnson is known for teams with offense… last nights performance was offensive.

My guess is they figured Dutton would have to get 3-5 outs at some point no matter what. They were out of arms. Better those outs be in the 1st and 2nd inning than the 7th and 8th.

Doug Thomson on the radio before the game said it was because he throws strikes and they didn’t want to risk a bunch of walks in the very first inning and UNC gain momentum out the gate. Well he threw strikes alright, and they all got hit

Yep. Dutton pitches to contact or gets Ks. Unfortunately, all of that contact found green grass to start. Worked out in the end, but the bats went cold.

that’s all they say about Dutton

“he throws strikes”

it’s not a strike if the batter smashes it back at you

Dutton definitely pounds the zone. To be fair to him two of those hits were seeing eye singles.

My issue with it is that they hit him in the other game. So you're basically starting them off with 1) a pitcher they've seen, and 2) confidence because it's a pitcher they've hit. I feel like Dutton should've been in reserve if needed, but not started.

He’s never been good enough and never will be good enough. I hated the decision too

So you’d rather him come in later in more high leverage situations because they’ve seen him and hit him?

That makes zero sense.

you can’t pound the zone with low 90s from the right side.

you gotta nipple the edges

Well, there's a reason he was a back of the bullpen guy. Still, if you're having to count on his to get outs I can understand why they preferred it to be early in the game, and not late.

I don't disagree. The pop fly is getting too much heat, imo. Even with that change there is no guarantee we win in the 11th

Dutton started versus Bama and Ole Miss.
It was something the kid had done with limited success.

Someone had to start. No one believed that we would hold them to two runs through 8, but with excellent pitching and good defense we did.

Dutton throws strikes. The idea being he could get an inning to start the game without walking a team to a big inning.

Dutton threw strikes as planned unfortunately UNC was ready to hit.

what nonsense. We still may not have won but to say that the play that let the winning run across had no bearing is just dumb

IDK the answer.

I think Jay was trying to find a path to 9 innings with the available arms. My guess is hoped to 'steal' a couple with Dutton at the start - hoping NC bats might be a little sluggish.

At the end of the day, major props to CJJ. We held a good hitting NC lineup to 4 runs in two consecutive games.

And Jump is a pitching warrior.

You want to talk about bad decisions? The worst pitching decision CJJ made all night was coming in with Helmers after Dutton and Coleman failed. THAT was a crazy bad decision.

In fact, every pitching decision he made was terrible. And that’s because after four games there were no good decisions left.
