re: Tony Clayton threatening Wade with jail time if he doesn’t play Luis

The injunction is not to force wade to play him, it is to allow him to be rostered, even still i am not sure how you can force a coach to roster a player
Legal minds, can someone explain why LSU would be legally obligated to roster Luis based on this TRO?
My understanding is that the TRO says Luis is eligible and that he cannot be prevented from playing on eligibility grounds. But does it actually say LSU must put him on its roster? Those are two very different things, and I don’t see how the first necessarily implies the second.
There are plenty of otherwise eligible high school graduates who never get roster spots at LSU or any other school. Being eligible to play doesn’t automatically entitle someone to a place on a team.
The only explanation I can see is that LSU made some form of binding commitment to Luis that he would be rostered if a court declared him eligible, notwithstanding SEC rules.
If that’s the case, it would lend credence to Sankey and the SEC’s argument that LSU is behind this effort and has a vested interest in the outcome - and would help explain why they might be seeking a federal ruling to supersede the state court’s orders.
Am I missing something? Does the TRO itself impose an obligation on LSU to roster Luis, or would that obligation have to come from some separate agreement or legal basis?

I guarantee you that Will Wade told him to threaten him with jail time

Easy. He is on the roster but does not play a minute.

Wade just said at the beginning of his presser that the players that are on the current roster is who he is going with, and he will not add anyone else.
If that holds any weight....

I say this with all due respect to Will Wade, who I like a lot and think will do very well...
When you lay down with dogs you get fleas. Going after someone like RJ Luis who you KNOW is not and should not be eligible leads to stuff like this

I just would like a legal opinion on what the lawyer is saying in interviews.

From legal trouble for paying players to possible jail for not playing players who are paid.
Wild turn of the world.

General Wade is probably thinking, "YES. Please force to me play Luis"

This is the absurd situation SEC created with the selective enforcement of the rule. It’s either 5/5 or it’s not. Rather than argue a hypothetical, now lsu can argue a real application of the absurdity of the situation the conference created.

i Love LSU but there is a simple undeniable legal line to determine if someone is a pro athlete or not.
Did you sign a pro contract?
If you answer YES, then you do not qualify to enter back into college athletics.

quote:Luis doesn't really fit that argument. He left school of his own accord and declared for the NBA draft before exhausting his remaining college eligibility. His situation involves a separate issue from the five-for-five rule: the consequences of declaring for the draft without properly withdrawing and subsequently signing professional contracts.
It’s either 5/5 or it’s not. Rather than argue a hypothetical, now lsu can argue a real application of the absurdity of the situation the conference created.
The five-for-five rule addresses the number of seasons an athlete may compete within a specified period. It does not, by itself, resolve questions of professional status or override separate rules governing athletes who enter a professional draft.

You cannot imagine how many idiots here will not let their brain accept that. Its commical. Just wait, here come all the b b but, xyz was doing it, or abc has one...etc etc etc
But they simply will not say, hes a pro
Wade is a bottom feeder and he has no regard for authority

Yea, this situation aside, the river parish southern law network of judges and their back room agreements with PI attorneys are a blight on this state and nothing to speak about reverentially.

It’s either 5/5
The age based eligibility rule that fully starts in the fall of 2027 is not truly 5 to play 5. It’s 5 continues years of eligibility with clock starting first fall semester or semester after turning 19 with a possibility to play 5. Whether one plays all 5 years is affected by multiple other variables including other eligibility rules like being a professional, ability, development, injuries, team rules, and so on.
Age based was also voted on and officially stated to start in fall of 2027 for incoming freshmen while the NCAA allowed the incoming 2026 freshmen signees and the returning athletes with remaining eligibility under the “old” rules after 2025-2026 year to use either the existing rules or the new age based eligibility rules whichever was to their benefit. They had a deadline date where the choice had to be submitted thru their university which I think was before most academic years began for 2026-2027, but I cannot remember exact date and might have been at beginning of the fall semester of classes for each university.
Luis had been out of eligibility since end of 2024-2025 academic year before age based rule was even proposed for a vote due to not following existing rules to maintain eligibility after applying for the NBA draft. The rules on professionals and eligibility are still basically the same as the rules when he last played, the rules last season, and the rules this season regardless of having new or old rules applied to him.

Technically, LSU, as a member of the SEC, is a defendant in the case. HA
