re: Tony Clayton threatening Wade with jail time if he doesn’t play Luis

It would seem counterintuitive to his business interests with the state and school but the optics of this are absurd.
LSU is not a party to this dispute. Luis is Clayton's client. His argument is that the judge says Luis is able to play (temporarily) and that Wade should be forced to roster him (so Luis can collect on NIL money). Clayton's argument, in a nutshell, is that LSU refusing to play an "eligible" player prevents Luis was earning money ancillary to being a college basketball player at LSU.
The underlying reality is that Wade would LOVE to roster and play Luis. But he's not going to do anything to give the SEC more cause to try to take further action against LSU. Clayton is trying to give Wade legal cover to play Luis so if/when the SEC says Wade/LSU breached SEC rules, Wade/LSU can counter that they were forced by the court to play the guy.
It remains HIGLY unlikely that Luis ever plays for LSU. This is just further setting up Luis's monetary claims against the SEC, NCAA, or others.

Good explanation, thank you. I legitimately was trying to understand the situation.

This the guy who said Kim Jong Sankey

According to Brown's report, Luis Jr.'s attorney had some pointed comments toward Sankey after the ruling was handed down in their favor on Wednesday.
"LSU may be intimidated by ‘Kim Jong’ Sankey, but we're not," Luis Jr.'s attorney Tony Clayton told Brown.
A slight shot at LSU, but an even bigger shot at Sankey and the SEC.

Was just messing with ya. I thought the sarcasm was obvious. My bad on that.

Once again, how can a coach be forced to play somebody?

he's doing this to give LSU/Wade more protection from the SEC,
Why would he do this? He’s not representing LSU or Wade. In fact, they are co-defendants in the suit he filed on behalf of his client.
quote:
He does not want to hurt LSU/Wade
Probably not, but I’m not sure that is—or should be—a factor. His loyalty should only be to what is in his client’s best interest. If that conflicts with what’s in LSU’s or Wade’s interests, he has to side with his client. May not WANT to hurt them, but has to be WILLING to if that’s what he deems is best for his case.
RJ Luis signed with LSU on May 19th. Where Wade/LSU may have some exposure would be if he asked to be released from that so he could enroll at another non—SEC school that would be willing to roster him and Wade/LSU either outright refused, or kept promising him that they would roster him no matter what.
Whether Wade was lying to him out of bad faith (in this hypothetical), which is doubtful, or had every intention of rostering him until the LSU/SEC situation got out of hand and changed their minds (more likely), I’m not sure matters. But discovery will be a bitch and all Wade’s communication (texts) between him and Luis will be made public. And conversations they had that weren’t recorded will be asked about under oath.
I have no idea if that will make Wade//LSU legally liable or not—it depends on what Wade told him—but I wouldn’t just automatically wave this off as a nothingburger. If LSU didn’t roster the football players who have a much better case, I can’t see how we can roster Luis. And if Clayton can argue that Wade/LSU prevented Luis from signing with another school that would have, it could get interesting. Too early to know how it will eventually all play out.

Discuss. I don’t even know where to begin
Its been obvious from day 1 that Wade would be a low character POS that will bring LSU into trouble. Hes a f'ing nightmare.
Is this set up? Maybe. But that makes it even worse than the other alternative.
BTW, whos paying Luis' lawyer?

Tony Clayton is an LSU fan. He's setting the stage for LSU to make the argument that they have no choice but to play this guy so when the SEC tries to expel LSU or punish LSU in any way, LSU can push back and claim they had no choice and the SEC is being the bad guys.
This LSU vs SEC issue is 100% going to finally lead to some actual written rules and change with all this stuff.

Wade could easily have filled that last roster spot if he didn’t want this. He”s playing with fire.

More like "threaten me with jail time to show we're not behind this when the SEC has their hearing in federal court in November. Then y'all can also sue the SEC for monetary damages like the football players have."

I say Wade should play him. This isn't football and it's time to call Stankey's bluff.

I'm pretty sure he said the same thing about the football players and look where that went. He's the prototypical scumbag southern lawyer that you see in movies.
That said, it's always good to have a lawyer like him on your side when you need him. At least he's fighting for his client.
You don't frick with Tony Clayton in East or West Baton Rouge Parish. His batting average is damn near 1000. Our good buddy Gordon brings him in on all of his cases that are going to trial.
