If player safety is the #1 concern, as they like to repeat constantly, then why on earth would they nitpick a QB that is clearly trying to get a first down and then give up to avoid getting hit? It is about as dumb as their ever evolving targeting rule (although the ejection penalty is absolutely ludicrous for the first offense),

This isn't about what Sam should have done and been aware of, that is done. It is about the double standard of getting out the measuring stick when the player is obviously trying to play according to their overall philosophy (I can't say play by their rule because technically that didn't happen).

I'd like to sit in on one of these meetings and watch their highly paid buffoons try to rationalize these rules that are clearly retarded.

If the rule isn't written this way, you'll have players taking feet-first long jumps for extra yardage. It's annoying, but this is how the rule needs to be. If you're concerned about the yardage, dive head first. If you do, normal rules apply.

I agree, I think we should adopt the NFL intent modifier for rules.

Sam clearly intended to get a first down, so it should’ve been awarded.

It was a mental mistake and he slid too soon. Need better awareness from a qb who likes to run as much as he does.

The point of the rule is PLAYER SAFETY. What are we even talking about?

This is Kenny pickets fault for his fake slide.

It should be down where the butt contacts the ground. Sliding feet first should still prevent the D from crashing in.

He could've easily ran for a few more yards before sliding.

Yes, I agree. But in that case, the player is not playing within the overall philosophy. THAT is when the measuring stick should come out.

When the QB is clearly giving up, it is not the time to nitpick.

Reading comprehension is a premium these days. We are discussing the double standard, not the decision. It was noted in the OP.

Do away with the slide. Plenty of QBs are putting up 500–1,000 rushing yards a season now. At that point, you’re not just a quarterback, you’re a ball carrier. Taking a hit is part of football. The slide rule made sense for guys like Peyton Manning. Peyton running wasn’t a threat, it was usually a necessity because the pocket collapsed and he needed a way to get down without getting injured. Nobody was worried about him breaking a 40-yard run.
If your QB is a legitimate part of the running game, he shouldn’t get special protection the second a defender closes in. If you want the rushing yards, take the hit like every other ball carrier.

Then defenders should be allowed to hit the QB until the butt hits the ground. Otherwise, as someone else stated, QBs will start doing feet-first long jumps.

This is one rule that is as it should be. If you are going to tell defenders they are not allowed to hit a player when he gives himself up, you have to call him down when he gives himself up.

This was on Sam. He started the slide too soon. He actually started it way too soon as he still had several yards to run before getting hit.

So are you going to be ok with a defensive player being allowing to technically hit a sliding QB if his butt hasn’t yet touched the ground?

I was thinking the same thing.

I read the entirety of the OP. I comprehended it completely.

It was just my 2 cents worth.

The rule stands. Evidently, you don't understand it.

Have a nice day.

That will go over well. Let's just protect the white QBs.

But I was happy to see him slide, but given the USC situation, he does need to be safe about it.

Personally I think it should be a non reviewable play.

We got screwed with this one of the few times Jayden slid as well.

Initially called a first but with ultra HD slow motion it was judged to be short.

You shouldn’t be completely let off the hook for a massive mental mistake but if it’s close enough the refs on the field say first then by all means that should stand

Its a controversial opinion..but a LOT of times the best decision for a QBs health is to dive at the defenders feet head first.

Avoids a situation like the Oregon QB

If that's the case, nothing should be reviewable. Reviewing whether a player was down before the first-down marker (or goal line) is probably the first thing that should be reviewable .
