The player has to decide if he wants safety or the first down....

the rule is written in the best possible way. now, players just have to play by the rule...

If its a critical first down, sacrifice your body and get the first down. stop being a pussy.

We want the game to be played safely but at the same time, it’s tackle football.

QBs make a choice to slide and they want to protect them when they do, but they don’t get the benefit of the doubt for where they decide to slide. If they’re not willing to take the hit for the first then that’s their choice.

This seems the easiest most objective solution.

If player safety is the #1 concern, as they like to repeat constantly, then why on earth would they nitpick a QB that is clearly trying to get a first down and then give up to avoid getting hit? It is about as dumb as their ever evolving targeting rule (although the ejection penalty is absolutely ludicrous for the first offense),

This isn't about what Sam should have done and been aware of, that is done. It is about the double standard of getting out the measuring stick when the player is obviously trying to play according to their overall philosophy (I can't say play by their rule because technically that didn't happen).

I'd like to sit in on one of these meetings and watch their highly paid buffoons try to rationalize these rules that are clearly retarded.

Cry me a fricking river....

as long as the rule is applied evenly in both directions, it's not a "double standard".
It is as fair as it can be.

These idiotic, protective rules are why the Oregon QB got hurt. Stop copying the NFL which is a fake league, it’s WWE, and play real football.

So are you going to be ok with a defensive player being allowing to technically hit a sliding QB if his butt hasn’t yet touched the ground?

No. If the QB slides feet first, the rules apply for D contact and the ball is down where the butt hits. If the QB dives head first, they should be fair game.

Reviewing whether a player was down before the first-down marker (or goal line) is probably the first thing that should be reviewable .

Reviewing what amounts to a subjective of “where the slide started and the hips started to drop” is very different then whether the ball crossed the goal line or first down marker.

That is why they should use the butt. It is a definite contact point.

D interaction should be determined by feet or head first.

The only tweak I would like to see to this rule is for the player to be marked down just like any other play, when their knee, butt, elbow, etc hits the ground, not when they "give themselves up". It's a little bit too arbitrary for my liking. Otherwise, I like the rule.

the rule is the rule and he started his slide early.

a player who receives a kickoff and is "trying to kneel" in the endzone but kneels on the 1 yard line. Let's just give them a touchback because that's what they were trying to do?

Sliding feet first should still prevent the D from crashing in

Every coach should do everything they can do to have his QB quit sliding feet first. It exposes the QB to a much more severe chance of injury should a defender still hit the QB. You are exposing your chest, face and are (for a period of time) in a sitting position, which means if you are hit, there’s a really good chance your head is going to be slammed to the turf, increasing the chance of a concussion. Dante Moore would have still been playing if he slid head first. If you slide head first, you are going to get hit in the back, and that’s a lot better than the face and chest. Not to mention if you slide head first you will get several more yards on the play.

I wish there was a way to apply common sense to this rule without having QBs use the rules to their advantage (Kenny Pickett fake slide). Leavitt was clearly being smart, not taking a hit, and taking the first. Because of a rule whose intention is to prevent a QB from faking a slide, he gets penalized for making what is in my opinion a good decision.

He could’ve taken 2 more steps then began his slide and it would’ve been a non issue. It was poor awareness by the qb. The rule is what it is. The player has to be smart/aware enough to understand it.

I believe that used to be the rule. But then Kenny Pickett did a fake slide during a game and kept running after the defenders eased up so as to not hit the sliding QB and get a penalty. They then immediately changed the rule to being down at the spot you give yourself up, and when that happened everyone almost universally agreed the rule change was for the best because being able to fake slide is complete BS

We're only bitching about this now because it went against us, but the blame lies on Sam for starting his slide so early.

We were shorted a yard + on that call.

The point of the rule is PLAYER SAFETY. What are we even talking about?

The point of the rule is to enhance player safety, not utterly bastardize the game. A college athlete can easily cover a yard or two on the slide without even trying. They can easily cover 3-5 yards if they are trying.

If the player is running, they can be hit.
If they dive headfirst, they can be hit.
If they leave their feet feet first, they can no longer be hit.

You simply can't allow players to gain yards while also being illegal to hit. That's not a double standard; that's basic logic.

Talk about opening up a can of worms

Every player intends to get a first down or intends to get a touchdown.
