NFL fans shouldn’t care about week 1 games?

When you can go 7-9 and make the playoffs it really doesn’t have high stakes on it does it?

And good attempt trying to cherry pick one sentence from the post

That happened twice? And one 7-9 team won round 1. You are catering to rarities.

Do we know yet if they're thinking 8 Bye's with the 9-16 teams playing in round 1, or are they gonna be stupid and keep the 4 Bye's with 5-24 playing round 1? 9-24 playing in round 1 would make for much more interesting matchups in every round. 8 games in round 1, 8 games in round 2.

I feel like we are going to have to drop a regular season cupcake at this rate. It’s just so many games.

That's long been needed.

Play 9 conference games and one non-conference P4 game. Two open dates.

24 game playoff is downright awful. Can't wait to see the CFP sell me 9-3 Kansas State at 8-4 Illinois as must watch TV.

To some degree, yes. The player "salary" market is only going to keep increasing (not just in football) and the schools want more money to keep up because they know even the wealthy donors are going to get to a point where they say "no mas".

You saw that recently at LSU. The donors were asked to commit a ton of money to buy out O and hire BK in 2022. Then they were asked to buy a championship contending roster for 2025. Then midway through they were asked to commit to pay BK's massive buyout. Then they were asked to pay a ton for Kiffin and Co. Then a ton for the roster. Then more to buyout McMahon and hire Wade.

The Wade hire took longer and was more difficult than it should have been given McMahon's awful 4 year record. That was because some of the donor based was tired of being hit for more and more money. That prompted the meeting at the Governor's Mansion this summer. Everyone is looking for alternative ways to fund the runaway train

Not going to happen. The media networks aren't going to pay more for less games

Programs can’t get out of the red anymore much less fund all the down card sports and afford the university upgrades they’ve funded for decades. It’s not sustainable.

Yeah, because we all know the 3rd place ACC team needs just one more shot to prove they are the best team in the land.

There is a huge difference in the top 2 or 3 teams and the bottom 22-24.

A 12 team playoff is the perfect amount to keep regular season wins and losses still feeling impactful without feeling like your season is over just because you lost 2 close games.

24 teams... might as well rest starters in half your games.

The fact that it can happen diminshes the value of each regular season game. So 10-6 makes the playoffs pretty often yes? So you can walk out of the dome after a loss and know you can do that 5 more times and still be ok. Stop trying to act like the NFL regular season week to week carries the same intensity as CFB. It doesn't and that's ok. They are 2 different products each with their own unique aspects that make them great. Don't force one to be like the other

The CFB regular season is what made it the best sport in the world. Now when those games means less, it diminishes the value.

That ended with people thinking they could accurately pick the "2 most deserving teams" out of 130 programs to play during BCS era for the title which was always a joke to think that mad any sense and during the 4 team playoff era again, 4 teams out of 130 is an absolute joke.

There are huge schedule discrepancies in CFB, talk about the regular season all you want but the way we crown champions in the past were complete jokes and not true playoff formats at all. The notion people could pick the 2 best or most deserving teams and only give them a shot afte rmassively imbalanced schedules were played between 130 teams is just laughable looking back at it.

I would rather more meaningful postseason games over regular season games every day of the week week, easily.

Just ruined the best regular season in sports. College football is going to end like NASCAR where they chased the money instead of listening to fans and killed the sport for a little while.

The “joke” as you call it is still going to exist at 24 teams. The response was always the same “well #5 doesn’t really have a claim to be #1 anyway so their argument doesn’t matter”, then it was “well #13 doesn’t really have a claim to be #1 anyway so their argument doesn’t matter”. Now it will be “well #25 doesn’t really have a claim to be #1 anyway so their argument doesn’t matter.”

But they all fail to realize the argument doesn’t have to be for them to be #1, it’s to be the last spot in the playoff. And every time it expands it exponentially increases the number of teams with a legitimate claim to be be included, which decreases the ability to differentiate those teams, and therefore increases the controversy.

when the NFL can schedule 40% of their needed wins as guarantees you can compare the two.

In a 24 team playoff. Notre Dame is in the playoff already. They are playing three games they could even think about losing. Miami is similar. Then look at the top big 12 teams. They gave no one. Even worse than most Indiana has a two game season. They lose them both and they are still in.

You can pencil in 6-10 teams a year in August.

Do you really want to see more shut games. No AD in his right mind would schedule a competitive out of conference game.

you are correct. Top 4 is fairly easy to identify but even when it was four the top 2 separated themselves but four or five teams could argue for spots 3-4

If we are looking for top 24 with no schedule similarities there will be a dozen teams are more with claims to spots 20-24.

So fans won’t pack the stadium each week cause some games don’t matter? Fans won’t watch these games cause they are meaningless? Players will not play hard cause they can lose 6 times? Nothing changes except how many teams have a chance at the end.

The average margin of victory in 2025 in games that included a team from a P4 conference was right at 30 points. Di we really want to see more of this to pad records to be the 24th seed going to slaughter in rd 2

College football is already over.

College football started to completely collapse when bcs stopping forcing every single game of the regular season to count and essentially be the playoff.

It’s been a spiral ever since
