In four SEC contests, LSU QB Danny Etling has completed just three attempts of at least 20 yards through the air out of 18 tries.

From ProFootballFocus (They go on to predict we lose 33-16 )

Well that's less than ideal. 16.6%

This has been my concern. We probably can't rely on the ground game against Bama. You can find yards against the Bama secondary...particularly with Eddie Jackson injured now. Testing the secondary isn't a strength of Etling's. His strength is short to intermediate passing but I worry Bama has the speed at LB to limit the effectiveness there. Can we really expect to dink and dunk our way down the field against that defense?

He's been awful at deep passes, no other way around it. It's a major weakness of his passing game.

Very good at the short and intermediate timing throws. Cannot put a ball on point >30 yards to save his life.

They are by definition low percentage throws, however, that is lower than we would want. It'll work itself out.

What would a reasonable % be?

Out of 3 for 18 I would suspect at least more like 6/18 minimum. That's only 33% but again you don't expect to hit even close to a high number of passes thrown over 20 yards. 3 for 18 looks even worse when you consider 1 of those 3 Ole Miss basically gave him a gift for that 1 TD leaving the WR uncovered and he just lobbed it up for an easy pitch and catch.

I was thinking in the 30% range as well. Here's hoping he can make them pay with a long pass on more than one occasion.

Definitely. I said from the beginning. He is going to have to play better than he has up to this point for us to win in November.

From October 2014:

quote:

om Brady has attempted 16 passes over 20 yards this season. He has completed only one. ...“Brady has the best arm under 15 yards but the worst deep arm,” the scout said via text.

Not too worried.

How many of those attempts were on 3rd and long? That's the worst scenario to be throwing those deep passes, and I feel like he was in that spot a lot.

Just keep the D from overloading the box and make them second guess. That's what we need from Etling.

Hurts only completes 44% beyond 10 yds.
Stop fretting.

Not that I'm comparing the two but have y'all ever watched Tom Brady play?

He picks defense's apart with short to intermediate passes!

Now with that said Brady does possess deep ball accuracy!

The key is short quick passes!

He hit 2 vs Ole Miss and another than was 17-18 yards down the field.

Confuse Jackson's replacement. Quick, deep passes may be available.

Jalen Hurts sucks at the deep ball

I swear its like some of yall assume LSU is the only one with weaknesses.

quote:

His biggest weakness has been accuracy down the field. Hurts has connected on just six throws that have travelled 20 yards or more through the air (27 attempts). With three of those coming on scramble plays — outside of the structure of the offense. Without hitting shot plays, Alabama’s offense becomes overly horizontal and much easier to defend.

quote:

Hurts has flashed, but now he needs to find consistency. True freshman or not, completing 23 percent of balls down the field isn’t going to be good enough.
