If we thought it was a big deal and were in a vulnerable situation then we would have helped pay their “buyout”.

It violates NCAA rules. The NCAA determines who can and cannot enter the portal. A school cannot set its own eligibility rules. Getting players to sign a revenue share agreement that attaches a cost to the transfer portal is a violation. It's a way to get around the portal rules. That's a no-no.
This kind of thing is as old as college athletics. Whether is illegal payments from the past or legal payments now, once money is in the pockets of the athletes, it's gone. You cannot get it back.
