A 1 loss LSU beat Oklahoma which was ranked #1 at the time and a 1 loss USC beat #4 Michigan.
LSU also had to play a Conf Championship game where USC did not since the PAC 10 didn't have one so LSU was 13-1 vs 12-1. LSU also had 5 Top 25 wins vs 2 for USC.
LSU was crowned winner of the Bowl CHAMPIONSHIP Series.
Seems pretty clear LSU was the champ.

Why should LSU be the accepting party. Everyone, including the AP and USC, agreed to how the championship would be decided. USC was left out of the game and the AP retaliated.
