LSU cornerback DJ Pickett is currently expected to continue to wear jersey No. 5, sources tell On3. An attorney representing Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels informed the school that LSU can no longer use his name, image and likeness and said he felt “profoundly disrespected” after LSU allowed Pickett to wear his former No. 5 jersey, according to ESPN.
Pickett wore No. 3 during in 2025 at LSU, earning On3 Freshman All-American honors and leading the Tigers with three interceptions, 37 tackles and a sack. The former Five-Star Plus+ recruit was wearing No. 5 when LSU opened preseason practice last week. Sources tell On3 that Pickett wearing No. 5 is in his contract with LSU.

JD is the greatest QB to ever suit up in purple and gold. Respect his decision

If it’s in Pickett’s contract, I’m sure attorneys who approved it made sure it was good to go. So with this said, I’m going to assume/hope LSU’s attorneys are half arse competent and as a fan, will tell Jayden to frick off.

As the arbiter of the number, LSU dropped the ball on this with both parties.

No reason to have this big rift over a number... Pickett just needs to do the right thing and go back to wearing #3

Well duh. If Jayden's mom expected LSU to kowtow to this nonsense she's really deluded

Yeah, the current player always wins. We should know that by now.

I'm glad DJ is keeping 5.
Also, if someone wants to wear the 9 jersey, then give it to him. I won't be offended by it and if Burrow is, then f**k him.
Former players thinking that their jersey numbers should be retired, honored, or respected is some seriously lame @ss bullshite.
Perhaps they should have confidence that they will be remembered as one of the greatest to ever wear whatever number they wore.

BK promised Pickett #5 when recruiting him. That was before Jayden exploded and won the Heisman. Jayden wins his Heisman, DJ comes here and BK is reluctant to give Pickett #5. BK and the ENTIRE staff is gone. Lane is brought in and DJ probably goes up to him and tells him about 5. Lane gives him 5 because he feels promises should be fulfilled. He’s preparing for a football season and he was not here to understand the history of LSU and its numbers. Lane is preparing for a football season, why would he fully know how the number system works. This a big nothing burger

Even if it isn’t, Jayden is still acting like a bitch. Can’t put this back in the bottle.

Good on LSU.
We should not concede to bullshite demands of a player who clearly has no love for the university and only for himself.

Entitled, petty, and spoiled. I still think this is from his mother but there is a reason every other program in the Country doesn't have this issue when giving away jersey numbers. This is beyond stupid. Concentrate on your NFL career young buck, you lost your LT you need to be more worried about your blindside than your College Jersey number.

This might be the most ridiculous off season topic ever.
Daniels and his mom are being pathetic over this. Taking legal action is silly.
I’m not sure why this was even brought up in a press conference weeks before the season.
DJ Pickett asked for a number and got it. Now if he threatened to transfer if he didn’t get to wear 5, then that’s another story.

Lane is certainly smart enough to know the significance of the number. But, he is honoring a promise made to a player by the previous staff. I’m sure he had the necessary information to feel like it was the right thing to do.

I don't know how people can't see that. I have no issues with the number being used, but there are PR considerations, and it looks like they did not even think about that.

Kelly shouldnt have been talking out of both sides of his mouth and worked the issue out before Pickett got on campus. Either tell JD that they would not let an offensive player wear the number, or tell Pickett he cant wear it.
