With the number of QB's getting injured and unable to play this season, I was wondering if there was a backup QB besides Rickey Collins. FSU stellar season was trashed after Jordan Travis went down. A&M has seen it's QB room decimated as well. We all remember Miles Brennan's accident that sidelined his career. Walker Howard pulled up stakes cause he did not want to wait his turn behind Daniels and Nuss. I watched Collin Hurley light up the US Army Bowl, so Nuss, Rickey, Hurley will be the three if I have it right. I am uncertain as to where Swann fits in to this picture. Really, I am confused because, is this not the same scenario that convinced Howard to leave? So we see where you need back up at the QB position but on the other hand how to retain them when they are warming the bench? Not even going to mention Texas and that QB fiasco.

Swann transferred from Vandy, that's probably the plan for a backup.

Nuss is your 2024 starter. Swan is the backup. Collins is emergency depth. Hurley is a very young high ceiling prospect.

Unless he absolutely shocks us (and the coaches) with a transformation over the off-season, Collin will likely transfer eventually. Probably after next season as a RS-So.

Eta: Hurley seems like a competitor. He's basically sacrificing a year of eligibility for a jump start on the 2025 and 2026 QB competition.

Still don't get why Walker Howard made a parallel transfer to be the 3rd string at Ole Miss.

A lot can change if LSU lands Underwood.

So you asked this
quote:

I was wondering if there was a backup QB besides Rickey Collins

Then said this
quote:

so Nuss, Rickey, Hurley will be the three if I have it right. I am uncertain as to where Swann fits in to this picture.

You just named a guy who has never started a game, a guy that has attempted two total passes, and a 16 year old. You don't see where a two year SEC starter fits into this QB room? Really?

What QB depth at linebacker position?

I think that’s what everyone is really worried about

Hurley will likely redshirt and the staff probably doesn't feel Collins is ready to take meaningful snaps, thus, we bring in Swann...

You bring in depth because if QB1 goes down, your then (before getting this kid out the portal) QB2 is a 16 year old. Not because Collins isn't ready. Collins has been getting high praise from the staff since he came in, and will be the bridge to get us to Underwood.

You literally answered your own question. We don’t want to look like FSU has since Travis went down. So we brought in a solid back up that has been an SEC starter.

He will be the backup to a senior this year at Ole Miss. He would be the backup to a junior at LSU.

Not saying I agree, but it's not completely illogical.

If we lose our starting QB, with this defense. Play the young players and get ready for 2005 because we aren't winning anything in 04.

I suspect that A.J. Swann would be the immediate in-game backup to Garrett Nussmeier because he could come in and continue to run the game plan as prepared that week by the OC.

However, if Nuss were to be lost for the season, then the next couple of weeks could move more in the direction of a dual-threat QB game plan. In that case Rickie Collins might get the start, and Colin Hurley might be the backup.

QB-PP1 Garrett Nussmeier
QB-PP2 A.J. Swann

QB-DT1 Ricke Collins
QB-DT2 Colin Hurley

I have reservations in re Nuss. He's looking more like a Brennan redux everyday

He has 3 years of eligibility left, 2 to play. So if Nuss starts next year, he could redshirt then still have 2 years left to play. If Nuss left after 1 year starting, he would be the front runner for the job in 2025 probably.

Also it only takes 1 weird hit or injury to your starter and he's the starting QB. Happens all the time.

I've never understood this comparison. Do people realize Brennan didn't ultimately materialize here due to injuries? Its not like he wasnt any good on the field.

It's definitely illogical. He left after his freshman year. Could he not wait 2 years to see what's up? He already redshirted, so he'd have 3 years to play if he didn't beat Nuss out, and transfered. At that point in time, would he have even gone to Ole Miss? Would LSU have even gotten a transfer in the portal?

Anyway, I like Hurley's upside more than Howard's. In the end, it worked out for us.

Perhaps you are proving the point. It looks like Howard thought he wouldn't play at LSU until his senior year AT BEST. And that was if he beat out Hurley, Collins and anyone else LSU brings in. At Ole Miss there is basically no one behind him.

3 consecutive 300 yd passing games as a starter. He looked plenty good to me.
