re: Is this year a bust if we don’t make 12 team playoff?

Not necessarily, too many variables happen during a season to say that at this point. Especially a team replacing so much production on offense a rebuilding a defense that was a steaming pile last season. We won't know the answer to this question until the end of the season and we know how it all unfolded.

Explain. Jayden developed at LSU.
As did those other 2. I’m not sure I’m following you.

It really is. This first game is as big as they get.

I would say every year is a bust if we don’t make it.
The expectation is to always make it. Obviously some years that realistically will be not likely, but we should be in the playoffs at a minimum 50% of the time, and if you can’t do that then you shouldn’t be the coach here.

Absolutely.
If we’re not a top 12 team at the end it will be a failure.

Going on rankings, we only would’ve made it twice in the past ten or so years with the current format so the standard is actually closer to a playoff run every 4-5 years.

One word,,,
DEFENSE
If LSUs defense is same as last year expect,,8-4 or 9-3...if we can keep teams under 24-28 points with defense improvement. LSU will be 10-2 or 11-1,,,
GEAUX TIGERS !

Fans aren't making the claim. Media keeps saying we have possibly the best oline in the country.
Except at center. TE group might end up being the second best on the team and could be highly productive. Could use more production from the RB group this season, JD carried a lot of the load with his feet. Definitely need to start with a W in LV.

Miles had slipped a step or two, which is why we pushed him out. Orgeron let things collapse, which is why we fired him.
Kelly has seemingly fixed the collapse, so now we return to the Miles standards... and 9-3 was what got him run off. It's not going to be acceptable going forward for Kelly, either. He knows this, he didn't leave Notre Dame to go 9-3 at LSU. He came to make playoff runs (plural), and win 1 or 2.

Yes. It was supposed to be year 3 when we put it all together and we had a NC offense last year. I could see us being ranked 10-12. but would love to get to the point of playoffs every year. Hot take, I know.

With auto bids to conference champs they don’t necessarily take the top 12 so being ranked in top 12 may not be good enough. .

not a bust.
The talent on this roster lies in the current freshmen class, and incoming freshmen class, to no fault of Brian Kelly.
if they make the playoff, great. They are still a few years off from really becoming a machine

I don’t really buy that. Going 8-5 in 2014 is what put him on the hot seat. Then refusing to make any offensive changes or part ways with Cam Cameron is what got him run off.

See this is what I don’t understand about LSU fans. Is he going to get fired next year if he goes 9-3? No? Then it seems like it is, by definition, acceptable.
It would be disappointing, sure. I just don’t know why everything with LSU fans has to be so adversarial toward coaches. Like.. can I be disappointed if we go 9-3 but still acknowledge that Kelly has set the program up for long term success, following the two worst seasons since Gerry DiNardo, and still be behind him moving forward? Why is that so controversial?
If you had told me in December 2021 that over the next two years Kelly would have a division title, a Heisman QB, the consensus #1 overall QB from Michigan committed for 2025, a higher SEC win% than Miles or Saban at LSU, and 8 more years on his contract.. I’d have said “sign me up.” In a heartbeat.

When I say "unacceptable", I'm talking about fan perceptions. Right now, we're still in a shell, happy and grateful for 9-3. I'll be ok with 9-3 this year.
That won't last, we're going to get cocky, arrogant and demanding soon. Going to want more, and the wins better look good instead of sloppy (go back and look at the Les Miles reference above).
Consider- we're favored in 11 of the 12 games, and yet most people are still predicting 9 wins... we're still afraid of it blowing up. We're not yet confident.
Once the confidence sets in, the expectations crank up. We beat USC, and everyone will want 10+ regular season wins. And if we lose to USC, everyone will be in despair and panic.

I will not go as far as saying a bust. But his seat will start to get hot.
