Did he ever do any recruiting? Lazy POS. Typical
Trent refused to get involved in the AAU aspect of recruiting. That was his downfall. He knew how to coach. That's why he did so well his first year when he actually had some talent to work with.

My vote goes for Charles E. Coates who posted an 0-1 record in the 1893 football season. I didn't renew my season tickets after that abortion of a season

Who is worse with money: someone who inherits $1M and then goes broke, or someone who has nothing and stays broke because they paycheck to paycheck to make ends meet? I’m not saying Smoke is THE worst, but he definitely belongs in the conversation. I guess I’ll do my research and see if the coach of the 1897 badminton team was worse though.

Trent absolutely did not know how to coach. People would say that since he was such a poor recruiter.
People love to label the guys who can’t promote the program as x &os masterminds. They did it with McMahon as well.

He’s not even the worst in lsu basketball history

No one will be worse than Curley. His 5 o'clock shadow and his complete failure to recruit. A 2-9 season. Getting blown out at home by Florida 58-3. Never compiled a winning record or make a bowl game. Had a chance in his 3rd year but allowed Arkansas to have over 400 yards rushing in a blowout loss to prevent going to a bowl game.

Smoke?
Although he doesn't add up to Skip, Paul, or JJ, he's far from "worst in LSU sports history" rhetoric.

Press made the NIT one year and finished 4th with Pistol Pete on the team, which is better than McMahon did in the NIT.
This is a dumb statistic. Back then the only teams to make the ncaa tournament were the winners of the sec. They had a great Kentucky era team in front of them every year back then. People always forget this. It was way harder to make the tourney back then. NIT teams of that time teams would be ncaa tourney teams of today

I don’t count Dale because he was at the end of his career
you don't count the best (in terms of actual results) coach in the history of LSU basketball? He is the best of the group you listed, by far. That is, if you look at results....but not many do that anymore.

Yea you can’t just leave Dale Brown off the list when he basically built the program himself

Smoke is a dick of a human being.

OK so he would have made 1 NCAA tournament in his 4th year, Pete's senior season, and the only season in which he won more than 14 games. He was a bad coach at LSU. Was he as bad as McMahon. It's a debatable question.

Not even close to the worst. Neither was Smoke.
Curley Hallman
Trent Johnson
Come to mind.

Dinardo brought the magic back, then went in a ditch. He actually pulled us back from the cliff that Curley had us on. He left a lot of talent for Saban to start with.
Yep. My entire tenure at LSU as a student was during the Dinardo years. He was actually a decent coach, but loyalty to Lou Tepper was his downfall.

Recently Fargas was worse.
Fargas was trash and things fell off badly in the later years, at least she made it to the NCAAT multiple times and made a couple sweet 16 early on before things fell south after Vans players graduated
