They should add the #7 to the #18 and make that player the #718. #groundbreaking

I could see a ceremony sometime in the future where they retire the jersey of the greatest #7s

Starting with Jones, Peterson and Fournette

Retiring numbers (absent transcendent matters, e.g., Jackie Robinson) makes very little sense. Rather, there is value of the number is reserved for those who prove themselves. Our #7 is actually a good example of my point. If it is reserved to the Petersons, Mathieus, Fournettes of the world to pass down to a Dylan Moses, etc. it becomes recruiting gold. It is therefore more beneficial to LSU and its fans than sticking it up on the upper decks and forbidding future players from wearing it. And, I would argue, it's a more respectful gesture to the Petersons, Mathieus and Fournettes in this way. You were so awesome and important that we reserve your number for the very best. We may not always get it right, but wearing #7 at LSU will forever be an honor because of what YOU did in Tiger Stadium during your time at LSU.

I think we should save it for the next 5* skill position player from St Aug (or at least New Orleans).

eta: never mind, Dylan Moses needs to wear it.

I thought that I read in the ESPN piece that he (#7 Fournette) is taking classes so that he graduates in 3 years? He's already planning ahead that he would be done in 3 years taking classes during summer and others online to get it done.

Number retiring is for basketball, because it's doable, being that there are usually less than 15 players on a team.

In football, there are upwards of 100 players. It just doesn't make sense for a number to ever be retired. But his name should be on the ring of honor.

I'm with the people who say the number should be passed down to other great players.

lf is taking a class load that will graduate him in three years!

Isn't PP taking classes to do that? I thought I saw that somewhere...

And I would LOVE it if Mathieu wound-up going back to LSU to graduate.

I hear PP is doing exactly that. Shaq came back and got his degree. His number deserves to be in the rafters. LF7 seems to have a really good head on his shoulders, and if he leads the team to the promised land and collect a Heisman or two on the way to his degree then #7 should hang high and proud not only to his achievements but also to so many #7's who proceeded him.

We're still 30-40 years away from retiring his number.

I think it should be kept on the roster forever. It's such an amazing tradition. When people see it, they know that 7 is special. Players see it and want to be #7. Players that wear it know what it means and wear it proudly.

It's a tradition that should stay a part of our history.

I'm pretty against retiring football numbers. It just doesn't really seem like a big deal. I love retiring basketball numbers though. It seems like it has more of a meaning there. Let 7 live on forever.

If Kevin Faulk and Josh Reed's numbers are not retired, then Fornette's number should remain in use.

Football rarely retires #s bc of the large #s of players on the team. I think "ring of honor" is the perfect tribute or statue would be nice too.

Not really. There are only around 30 numbers available in basketball (is 0 allowed? 00?) since you can't have a digit higher than five.

There was a thread yesterday on the recruiting board about a conversation between LF7 and Dylan Moses. LF7 basically told Dylan that he's "holding the number down for the next great to come through LSU and that was him" so it seems like Fournette himself doesn't really want the number retired. But at the end of the day I guess it's what the school wants.

Here's the link to the thread.

That's not true from my understanding. Kids can wear any number they want it's just certain numbers aren't as popular and that tends to be the larger numbers. And Russell Westbrook was #0 I believe at UCLA.
