And in 2006, per the final polls,we lost to the eventual national champion Florida and #8 Auburn team (the only team to beat Florida that year), both on the road.

The 2007 squad, per the final polls, lost to two unranked teams, one at home. Yuck.

He probably would have found a way to lose several more games and ruin our national championship in 2007, just like he did with our 2006 team which should have been much better

He did not have the killer instinct or “it” factor. He found ways to lose games rather than win them.

Matt Flynn threw an interception to blow the Arkansas game in 2007. He got got the benefit of not having to play Florida and Auburn on the road and having a freak ending to the season that allowed us to sneak in the championship game.

If you have to ask if he is a top 5 LSU QB then the question is answered. When he left that wasn’t when debatable.

When he left he was 3rs in career Passing Yarda (in only 3 years)
2nd in single season Passing Yarda
1st (Tied) in single season passing TD
2nd in career passing TDS (again in only 3 years)

He wasn’t just arguably top 5 but arguably the best before Burrow. The only reason to argue otherwise would be his NFL career.

He also had the disadvantage of having half the DL being injured for several games of the season, including Ky and Arkansas.
If my memory is correct, we had the Arkansas game won, but after the play was over, our DE roughed the Arkansas QB.
That play allowed Arkansas to continue playing.

The way he carved up Notre Dame in that Sugar Bowl was impressive.

That's nice and he looked great. In fact he had these highlight moments but it was one season of being great, with a few clunkers. HIs prior season he was remarkably average.

As another poster commented Jamarcus relied on his arm talent and neglected being a student of the game. Kiffin didn't want to draft him but Davis insisted. He was bound to fail given his poor work ethic and discipline.

There are people on this board who seriously think Flynn was a better QB at LSU than Russell, so yes.

Until Burrow, Russell was the best QB LSU had in quite some time.

JR's college career has always been misremembered and overrated in hindsight. It was a bad draft year and the idiot raiders have always been in love with the long ball. Notre dame's crappy defense made JR more money than anything. JR was ok but he was more of a 3rd or 4th rd project to anyone with a clue.

Russell needed another year to perfect himself decent enough, but Russell was exactly what people draft in the first round. Aaron Rodgers had problems and was a first round pick. GB got him to develop him behind Favre. That's what should have happened to Russell. Drew Brees was another first round pick that had problems coming out and played terribly his first few years, but he had the talent.

Another thing people haven't brought up is Jimbo. I don't know what it is, but no Jimbo QB has been able to find his footing in the NFL despite MANY being selected in the first round. Winston, is a guy that still has major potential to become an elite QB, but Winston was a guy people talked about as already being a pretty damn polished football mind wise coming out of high school. Him, like Fields and Lawrence, and others, were considered guys that were just passing through college on to their destined first round status.

Brees was a 2nd round pick, actually. 1st pick of 2nd round

Actually the exact opposite. Jamarcus was incredibly clutch in his career when games were close:

2004 v. Oregon State: In his first game ever he comes in for an ineffective Randall and converts a fourth down and throws a touchdown and runs for 2 to tie the game with a minute left in the game.

2004 v. #11 Iowa: Comes in for ineffective Randall & Flynn, throws TD to take the lead with just over a minute left. (we lose on fluke hail mary).

2005 v. #15 Arizona State on the road: throws a 4th down 40 yard touchdown to win the game with 1 minute left.

2005 v. #4 Alabama on the road: throws a TD in overtime to win the game.

2006 v. #8 Tennessee on the road: throws TD with 9 seconds left to win the game.

2006 v. Ole Miss: throws 4th down TD with 14 seconds left to send game to overtime.

Let's not forget he went to the worst run organization in the NFL in the Raiders. I really think had he been in a better organization he might have had a chance.
Yeah. It was Lane Kiffins fault that he got fat and refused to learn the playbook.

He was a monster in college but as soon as that wallet was full he didn’t give a frick.

He played to to get paid not because he loved the game.

I think Russell’s 2006 game vs Tennessee encapsulates his career very well.

He threw three touchdowns. This included a throw over the middle to Buster Davis that was an absolute laser and only a handful of QBs ever could make. Another TD was the game winner to Doucet after a last minute drive.

He also threw 3 interceptions. One was returned for a touchdown and the turnovers in general are why the game came down to a last minute drive. That game ending touchdown to Doucet was “intercepted” by Doucet and was intended for Bowe.

JR was a better QB than Flynn in college and a generational talent. He was also inconsistent and could put team in positions that required heroics. I think he could have been an even better college QB than he was with a better scheme and approach that suited his game.

They were 56:44 run to pass. The offense should have been built around Russell. 2019 he would have thrown it 450 times.

He was a very college QB. Professionally, he never put the work in and did not have discipline. End of story.

JaMarcus was awesome here. Had some inconsistencies but aside from a couple of games (Florida & Auburn in ‘06, Georgia in ‘05) he was generally incredible to watch in 2005-2006 with some of the things he did. I tell people all the time that he’s one of my favorite Tigers, but casual and younger fans definitely let his NFL failures cloud their judgement of his LSU career.

I know he has himself to blame with his NFL career, I just wish he could’ve gone to a more stable franchise. Not saying he would’ve lived up to the hype by any means, but him going to the shite show that was the Oakland Raiders in those days was the absolute worst thing that could’ve happened.

Of course. What I said is that we would have lost several more games with JR at the helm, genius

Jamarcus went 11-2 with an elite team talent-wise in 2006.

The 2006 team was way more talented than 2007. 2007 overachieved by going 12-2.

Jamarcus on the 2007 team would have meant 8-4.

I cannot agree. They rarely turned Russell loose because they didn't trust him. He was not top five for LSU.

Burrow, Bert Jones, Hodson, Davey, Screen, Ensminger, Risher were all better college QBs. Although only Bert Jones had the same level of talent.

But arm talent was as good as anyone to ever sling it.
"Arm Talent" alone don't win no SEC/National Championships. (And isn't that the one and only goal?)

Just ask Mauck, Flynn and Burrow.

I doubt if you'll ever see a QB at LSU again with only a strong arm and none of the other necessary intangibles.

No more "Square Peg-Round Hole" QB's that can't hit the broad side of a barn throwing the football, read a defense or process information quickly. (The Les Miles dysfunctional QB technique)

These may be the 2 stupidest consecutive fricking posts in the history of the internet, much less the Rant. Like should be embarrassing for your family fricking stupid, but like you 2, they are likely too fricking stupid to even realize just how fricking stupid you you tucking stupid dipshits all are.

Not that you stupid fricks deserve it any more of my time, but I’ll go ahead and post some JR 2006 stats:

—led LSU To 11-2 récord and Sugar Bowl win
—completed 67.8% of his passes (1st in the SEC)
—for 3129 yards with 28 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions
—led the SEC in average yards per attempt at 9.1 (his career of 8.3 y/a still ranks 16th all time)
—led the SEC (and the nation in the Power 5s) in passing efficiency rating at 167 (his career PER of 8.3 still ranks 17th in SEC history)
—SEC Offensive POW 3 times
—1st team All-SEC
—winner of the Manning Award given to the nations’s best QB. This is the list of wii eres of that award:

Season Player Team
2004 Matt Leinart USC
2005 Vince Young Texas
2006 JaMarcus Russell LSU
2007 Matt Ryan Boston College
2008 Tim Tebow Florida
2009 Colt McCoy Texas
2010 Cam Newton Auburn
2011 Robert Griffin III Baylor
2012 Johnny Manziel Texas A&M
2013 Jameis Winston Florida State
2014 Marcus Mariota Oregon
2015 Deshaun Watson Clemson
2016 Deshaun Watson Clemson
2017 Baker Mayfield Oklahoma
2018 Kyler Murray Oklahoma
2019 Joe Burrow LSU

But yeah, he was overrated in hindsight and should have been. 3rd or 4th round pick.

Stupid fricking fricks.
