Has JRussell's college career been dissed because of his NFL failure?

I don't know who could throw a football farther, or tighter...Russell, or Davey. Both could throw it through a mailslot at 60 yards.
It seems like he MAY get a wink-and-a-nod because of his #1 overall-bust.
But I think he is a top-5 all timer for LSU.

Hodson
Jones

The way he carved up Notre Dame in that Sugar Bowl was impressive.
I guess when he saw those dollar signs with guaranteed money he lost it. Let's not forget he went to the worst run organization in the NFL in the Raiders. I really think had he been in a better organization he might have had a chance.

His arm was so strong and release so quick he didn’t need to throw on timing or read defenses. He suffered greatly for never having learned the finer points of playing the position at the highest level. But arm talent was as good as anyone to ever sling it.

I agree the raiders we not a good fit for him...but holding out and being in terrible shape didnt help him either when he joined the raiders....
Wonder how much guaranteed money does he still have in the bank

Russel never read a defense in college. He dropped back and rarely threw on rhythm. A lot of it was sitting in the pocket having dudes just bounce off of him and he scrambled a little then slung it downfield when Dwayne Bowe eventually got open.

He was a very good college quarterback with great talent just never took the next step mentally that would have made him a good NFL quarterback.

JR had a much stronger arm than Rohan. Not even close.

Seems like our receiving corps had some high YAC numbers in those days. Bowe, Davis, and doucet, made some serious plays in the screen game and shorter routes. I might be wrong but it just seems like we didn’t throw many 9’s (vertical routes) with jamarcus.

Russell had everything physically you could want except brains. His decision making skills were terrible.

They never really took the training wheels off of him at LSU. His college career is not dissed, but he just wasn't as popular as he could have been in other offenses.

If his uncle didn’t die he would have lasted a lot longer in the nfl. He looked up to his uncle and he got on him when he was messing up. I think his uncle died of cancer right before he got drafted. Jamarcus still needs accountability and that is on him for not taking care of business.

His problems with the Raiders stem much more from immaturity than a lack of intellect. He could have been Einstein but if you're not reading the playbook and you're wasted on lean and 50 pounds overweight, it's not going to help. I'm not even judging him really. I personally would promptly lose motivation to do my job if someone gave me $50M.

If he had stayed for the championship in 07 he would be remembered much better, IMHO.

He probably would have found a way to lose several more games and ruin our national championship in 2007, just like he did with our 2006 team which should have been much better

He did not have the killer instinct or “it” factor. He found ways to lose games rather than win them.

JR's college career has always been misremembered and overrated in hindsight. It was a bad draft year and the idiot raiders have always been in love with the long ball. Notre dame's crappy defense made JR more money than anything. JR was ok but he was more of a 3rd or 4th rd project to anyone with a clue.

Exactly. He had the physical tools but nothing else.

When it comes to pure "oomph" in throwing the football, realistically there are Jones and Russell, then everyone else.

Marcus Randall was interviewed in Tiger Stadium once and asked about all the stories about Elway throwing a Nerf football 100 yards or Bert Jones reportedly throwing a football out of Tiger Stadium from the end zone. Randall looked at the field, looked up at the upper part of that end of the stadium and told the interviewer, "I bet Jamarcus could do it."

He made throws like this, routinely (not always accurate, but distance)

Umm... we lost the same amount of games in 2006 as we did in 2007.

I always thought Russell was inconsistent. He could and would make throws that only one or two NFL QBs could make (like rolling out, flicking his wrist and hitting a tightly covered receiver in stride 50+ yards downfield for a TD againt MS State) and then couldn’t make routine throws to open receivers (see the entire game against AU in ‘06). The light came on for him in the latter half of ‘06, but the rest of his career was a bit of s roller-coaster.
