He was the third of 3 LSU centers the Orlando Magic drafted in the first round in consecutive years.

91 Stanley
92 Shaq
93 Geert

Damn, I forgot about Stanley being drafted in the 1st round too. That is one of the most unbelievable and oddest things ever to have 3 centers drafted by the same NBA team in consecutive years. I can't even ever remember a school having 3 centers drafted in 3 consecutive years.

His senior season was the last great one of the Dale Brown era. They lost to Cal, led by Jason Kidd, in the NCAA 1st Round. Kidd's winning basket looked an awful lot like a travel.

All 1st round picks. I doubt a team has ever drafted 3 players from the same school in the first round in 3 consecutive years...no way 3 centers

He was way cool. I sat with TJ Pugh at all the womens gymnastics meets and we'd ogle the flexible strong ladies. Geert would show up every now and then to join in, and it was always a good time. Really cool guy all around. He would sit in the seat kinda reclined, and his feet would be on the floor of the row ahead of him.

Rumor has it that he almost got killed by a ceiling fan while drinking one night in Plantation Trace circa 1990. Apartment 180. Don’t ask me how I know. I plead the 5th. He was a character.

One night way back in the day after the bars in tiger land had closed, a girl I knew came up to me and said her and her date’s ride had disappeared and she asked if I could give them a ride to his apartment. I said that I’d be happy to. Her date was Geert Hamminck. It was funny seeing his almost 7’ tall self crammed into my Subaru station wagon. His knees literally touched the windshield.

He was brilliant on the court, but unfortunately spent 3 of his 4 years mostly on the bench thanks to Shaq.

He did occasionally play out of control and pick up silly fouls.

My wife and I ran into him the night before the LSU v Texas A$M game in College Station 1991. He was drinking like a normal college student. He hung with us while we bought beers. I guess that is an NCAA violation. I just hope the statute of limitations has expired.

He was a good dude. Seemed very humble and grounded (while we kept feeding him beers).

I remember when he was selected at the draft and one of the announcers immediately says “the Orlando Magic are clearly concerned about the salary cap and pick Geert Hammink.”
