In the postgame he talked about the strategy and I thought it was interesting.

He said Paul was ready for about 30 pitches but.

-didnt want to start him and give Florida a confidence boost when he would have to take him out

-when the game got out of hand, he was only going to put him in if it got to within 5.

-it was obvious he used him to intimidate UF, going down to the pen in the 5th

It’s almost as if Jay has way more information than the average fan who just tuned in a week ago. He knows more about baseball than everyone on this board combined. Time to let the man do his thing and trust it’s for the best

It’s obvious that CJJ reads tScoreboard during the game to glean his strategery.

That’s actually some deep strategy.
I would not have considered Skenes coming out of the game as a momentum builder for Florida, but after hearing him say it. Yeah it makes some sense.

And Thatcher Hurd was throwing darts.

30 pitches is no big deal. They do about that on their off days.

yea I didnt really consider that either but it makes sense.

Despite the results for a lot of the year, CJJ had a ton of confidence in Hurd, going as far as calling im an ace in the presser.

It's really really REALLY obvious that Jay loves his players

He had said Bertman gave him advice, and to not start Skenes. I would bet the other bullet points came from Bertman as well.

CJJ said this in postgame? Or this is your theory?

that's my theory but it plays in with how CJJ uses psychology in his coaching

If he didnt want to start him for psychological reasons, sending him down to get ready when LSU was already up big just had to be a bit deflating to the Florida hitters who were desperately trying to get anything going

The thinking around me was that we'd see Skenes in the 9th.
As a curtain call, since we obviously didn't need him by then. But Jay just warming him up for the intimidation factor? That's something I didn't even think about.

That is the game elite coaches play. It was masterful.

curtain call,

Actually I did NOT want a 'curtain call' - that wold have seemed to minimize the accomplishment of the pitcher being replaced.

Skenes has his place in LSU history at the top - he has many more achievements ahead - that guy he would have replaced may never ever get another spot to show his mettle.

AND - just think what would have happened IF - you replace with Skenes, and the next batter (or 2 or 3 - - - ) goes HR - that MAY have happened - then you gotta PULL him and let his career at LSU be on a downer.

NOPE - it would have been more exciting for US FANS if he had been NEEDED in the bottom of the 9th to stop a FL rally - now THAT would have been fantastic. (but glad we didn't have to cross that Rubicon)

I think Skenes is grown up enough to appreciate the situation - sure he WANTED to make an appearance, but i'lll bet it was not to just 'appear' - he wanted to be NEEDED -

and when he WAS needed - he stepped up EVErY TIME! - there are NO blots on his record here - THAT is his legacy -

Even thinking about messing up that legacy for some gratuitous 'look at me' moment doesn't sound like something Skenes would REALLY want.

my 2c worth -

When thinking about skeenes playing this scenario never popped in my head. Guess that’s why I’m a fan and not a coach. But it’s a really valid point why not start him.

I don't agree here. CJJ comes off as his own man to me without question. Really sharp and a true thinker.
