Either way, outside of McNeese, he had basically 1 tackle a game

I just hope he’s Dom McKinley. Being Smith would be shite. I’m sorry but he may be the biggest “what if” had he not been hurt. He will still need a year to get stronger and used to the longer season so we need to find 2 more DTs.

We haven't had a dominating interior defensive lineman since, who? Dorsey? Brockers?
Drake Nevis is as close as we’ve come to a dominant defensive tackle since Dorsey. We’ve had some good ones, but none who were just all around disruptive.

Lawrence was solid for us but your point stands. Honestly, Apu Ika was probably the best interior guy we’ve had in awhile.

With our current defensive coaching staff I am fairly confident that our recruits are going to develop a lot more than under the previous staffs. I like where we are at currently.

Smith gets a lot of undeserved shite on this board.

He played really well as a true freshman and was freshman AA

He was destroying FSUs OL on the first few plays of his sophomore year, then he blew his knee out.

Sure this past year, with a god awful defensive coaching staff, he struggled. But he was still recovering from the knee. Toward the end of the season he was starting to play really well.

He’s a guy who, with the new defensive staff, could have really shined and helped us out a ton had he returned.

Freak, Lawrence, Shelvin, Roy, Guillory, Maason...were all rated pretty high but sadly, underachieved according to their star billing/fan expectation.

Agree on your post except for Maason...BTW only his TR FR year. MS was a monster his first year at LSU. But then of course in the first game his SO season against FSU, he celebrated by jumping up in the air and came down to tear his ACL. Missed the entire 2022 season and then in 2023 was just a shadow of his former self.

Lawrence was better than he is getting credit for. He dealt with injuries a bit like Maason. We were a better defense when he was on the field.

Roy was solid as well. Not a superstar, but solid.

Shelvin was good run stuffer when on the field. Ate himself off the field that kept him from playing enough.

I'll stick with my 7 games although I'm not betting the farm on it. Unless he didn't have any stats in those other 2 games and these sites don't count those, here is where I got my info. BTW, his 2nd best game was KY...a good game there.
Sport Reference site Maason Smith stats
ESPN Maason Smith 2021 statline

Even lsusports.net says he only started 4 games. My guess is he essentially played in 7 to speak of and maybe one or two series in the other 2 games. I still count that as 7 really.

Agree 100%. Did not know he was FR AA. In 2021, I remember him providing a good bull rush up the middle compressing the pocket with great leg drive. But as you said, he was still recovering from the ACL injury this season. My brother really keeps up with pro football and knee injuries/comebacks. He says that 1 year for most players is not enough to regain your pre-ACL form. He simply didn't look like the same player in 2023 as he did in 2021.

KWL85 had a good post also. Old Man River too. Wow, a rarity these days that a thread stays on original topic and the posts are really good.

I look at him and i see Michael Brockers in a couple years.

He can probably carry 320 very comfortably. He is strong and I see him just bullying guards when he fills out.

hes is already big but you can look at him and see he can put on a lot of good weight

But he didn’t. He mostly got shoved around like so much dirt by opposing offensive linemen.

Michael Brockers was a dominant tackle, and so was his running mate Bennie Logan. That was two dominant tackles who utterly controlled offensive lines that year.

All the upside in the world. Size, length, freaky athlete. Early impressions indicates he is set up to be more successful than Maason was (coaching staff/overall state of the program). He is going to get the best possible coaching something Maason did not get. Pulling for the young man, the potential is all there.
