I know he's supposed to be a big recruiting asset, and big on talent evaluation. However, the special teams this year was historically bad. There's no way to justify letting him continue in that ST coaching role. Support staff can't be on the road recruiting correct? Is he valuable enough of a recruiter to keep him in an advisory support staff role or keep as an on-the-field coach to be able to get out and recruit? You can watch film and evaluate talent from an office. CBK needs to get Greg McMahon on the horn, or hire another defensive assistant that can also coach ST.

can we have one BP thread stickered at the top? for those who need to check every 30 seconds? that would be helpful for the rest of us who dont

Most likely scenario is BP remains ST coach but an analyst is brought in to actually run special teams, freeing him to recruit and scout

The one thing that Gordy has mentioned alot about ST is that when it takes a while to know who your two deep is, it creates a lot of movement on ST. For that reason alone, I think BP gets another season.

I would also like to add on the Blocked FG, even the GA coach clearly didn't know the rule so he needs a little leniency on that whole debacle.

Special Teams is the area of the game most affected by poor depth.

When we had 37 players at the end of last year, everyone should have known that Special teams would have some rough moments this year.

That being said, they have been worse than expected and a move should be made (but likely won't be).

Well some of the Georgia players knew the rule. It is shocking to me that a ST coach wouldn’t have the players ready for this. Does no one remember the kick 6? Hell, we pulled it off against UAB one year.

That was the UGA OC they showed saying stay away. Promise you the ST coach knew. At the very least it’s situational awareness and not playing until you hear the whistle. On EVERY play!

the UGA coach knew the rule. he didn't want anyone to pick it up because they could fumble it.

From what I have gathered, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but on-field coaches get more time/access to recruit. An analyst is not legally allowed to recruit as much as an on-field coach and that's why he is a special team coach. Also, he is Kelly's righthand man. There is zero chance he gets fired.

They're the only ones who can contact players outside of campus visits, IIRC. Basically you can't (legally) recruit as an analyst.

Polian is the head of our recruiting, so he has to have a bullshite coaching title. STs is a title guys like him often get (I don't think USC even has an official STs coach) b/c it's not as intense of an on-field role. If he gets moved to a more bullshite title (TEs coach or AHC or something), we'll have to fire somebody to make room for the STs coach (or just go without one officially, like USC).

False, the GA coach was saying don’t pick it up because they would lose roughly 20 yards. The player knew the rules and waiting until all LSUs players back was turned before picking it up.

There is ZERO excuse for that. I was watching saying that ball is live, wondering why we didn’t even run towards it. Pure stupidity!

He can stay on the staff in some capacity but there needs to be a shakeup in the way special teams are handled. We should bring McMahon back.

I could see him reassigning him to recruiting and talent evaluation, but I’m not sure he can keep his level of pay if he’s not an on field coach. At that point it becomes a decision for Polian to make. Just not sure who would hire him for an on field position after watching our ST this year.

If you are making a six figure salary as special teams coach at a top football program , then you absolutely have to have your team prepared for this. It is inexcusable. Plain and simple. This is not some rare occurrence in football.

Depth had nothing to do with allowing a touchdown after a blocked field goal. Dropping punts and kickoffs has nothing to do with depth. Lack of preparation and competence has everything to do with it.

They both need to sit down and ensure they are teaching and communicating all the rules

The Ga. coach didn't think we would be stupid enough to forget a live ball. We were.
