quote:It crossed my mind. If we’re protecting a lead Friday night you have to think Money, Floyd, Fontenot, and Edwards are the top 4 depending on inning/situation right?
The only thing I could think was that this weekend was one last chance for those guys to prove something before being out on the shelf. That’s my hope at least
ETA: Southeastern is going to be tough Tuesday. The good thing is they’re playing 4 game series in conference, just finished their first one, so their pitching plans are probably out of whack.

I don't think Hilliard is unreliable. I like him starting an inning though rather than a stopper.

So Ole Miss loses to ULM and Arkansas loses to La tech but we should be freaking out and melting about close WINS against UTSA? And talking about how the big bad SEC WEST is going to kick our teeth in right?

I still think Brady is useful. He’s so different than every other pitcher on the roster. And I’d much rather him be used for one out against a lefty than Hasty.
Brady has at least hammered the strike zone.

Surely he’s better than George.

I don't think that you truly don't think that.

Guess we’re gonna need another 3-run HR to extend the game.
Okay, I was a bit off as we got a 2-run HR and a solo HR. I’ll gladly eat my crow here.

Nice comeback!... Again. There are three things I'm quite sure of, at the moment with this team. We can hit the long ball (boy, can we hit the long ball!), we have excellent starting pitching, and we have zero bullpen depth. Tons of pitchers, not very many reliable one's.
I see the usual comments about people apparently not having the right to be critical of anything after a win. Or heck, even a loss, sometimes. It's not surprising to be in a close ballgame, in baseball, against a team you think you should blowout. That's easy to brush aside, especially when you win. But it's not so easy to brush aside blowing a 4 run lead in the 8th, one night, and then a 7 run lead in the 7th (5 going into the 9th) the very next day, against ANYONE, let along a so-so team at best.
The bullpen is a very definite concern. All that aside, the thrills of these comebacks and all of the home runs were a real throwback. That was the most fun (bullpen performance aside) that I've had watching LSU baseball, in a long time. This is the sort of stuff that made me love college baseball, and I've really missed it ever since they screwed with the bats.

LSU is not the only team in the world that can hit, and therefore not the only one capable of blowing a lead. It’s happened to other teams. If Doughty doesn’t throw that one down the line then we may never go to extra innings in the third game. LSU is clearly trying to find out who will be reliable in the bullpen later in games and maybe should have thrown different people in the third game. There’s a lot of young talent there and hopefully the bullpen will become more consistent as the season goes on.

I'm not sure how being able to hit makes you capable of blowing leads. Maybe you meant to phrase that a different way. At any rate, I certainly did not say LSU was the only team who could hit, nor did I say they were the only team capable of blowing a lead.
But there's a big difference between saying you're "capable" of blowing a lead, and blowing two big leads late, two days in a row.

His throw that went down the line was going to be a hit, anyway, and the way the inning played out, I don't think it had an impact. That being said, even if the error did have an impact, lets not pretend that blowing a seven run lead can all be blamed on that one play. Not that you were insinuating that, but I'm just saying... A 7 run lead is a 7 run lead. The bullpen shouldn't have let it get close.

I'm not even worried about who coach threw out there today, or yesterday. The fact is that we've seen all these guys pitch, and no one has been reliable. Floyd has looked the best since his rough first outing, but he's pitched very sparingly, so we still don't really know if he's ready.
And that's the thing: These two blown leads are just the headliners. The 'pen has been bad all year, so far. The sky is not falling. I said it was a concern; and I think I'm being very fair and generous in that assessment.

Our pen is one big question mark right now.

I could have phrased it better for sure. My point was that there are plenty of teams out there who can hit and are capable of causing a team to blow a lead. LSU is not the only team who can or will blow a lead. UTSA did it as well.

Yeah LSU has to learn to finish games. This not unique to LSU. They also came back and won both of the games. There’s something to be said for that as well.

Yeah it was definitely going to be a hit. But the error was not on the pitching and you can’t say it didn’t have an impact because LSU could have still gotten 3 outs and won. You can’t use hindsight to say it didn’t matter.

No I wouldn’t say that. The bullpen was the major issue. The team has to find a way to put that one away within 9 innings. Fortunately they found a way to win and still won both.
