1st Half Defensive Plan

Lane’s PC stated it very clearly that they wanted to keep everything in front.
I assume their thought was bend-don’t break defense at least until it didn’t work.
In theory, it makes sense and is a good plan if executed. Let them dink & dunk until RZ and then clamp down.
My issue is that Baker did not change until 2H when it clearly was not working and then he went back to it in Q4 for some strange reason after seeing bump & pressure working in Q3.
This is fixable and schematic. I imagine Lane and Baker won’t make that mistake again this season.

Not saying it would have been my plan, but clearly Lane thought trying to stop them in the RZ and limit to FGs was the plan.
My issue is it wasn’t working. Chambliss ate it up. And we adjusted too late and then abandoned the adjustment.

It’s almost like Baker thought we were playing Marcel reed instead of Trinidad.
You make Marcel reed read zone coverages and pick you apart down the field. With Trinidad you gotta bring heat and play press man and hope for the best.

The playing 15 yards off receivers on 3rd and like 5 is what I did not understand. Trinidad is way too good to give him that. Easy pitch and catch for first downs.
On the other hand Sam had the same opportunities multiple times and never even looked at the receiver just tucked and ran.
There was no doubt Trinidad is light years ahead of Sam as a total QB and was the difference in this game. Trinidad made the plays/throws when they were available and Sam did not. Bottom line.

Best defense we ever played against BY was in ‘21 with Daronte dialing up blitz all damn night.
That ‘21 team was horrible but we took bama to the wire that night because of that D game plan.
That was the move last night and we chose wrong and adjusted way too late.

They were 7 of 9 on third down and almost every won was six yards or more. Truly horrendous stuff

Yeah that’s my issue here.
I can live with getting beat if we blitz. At least we go down swinging. But sitting back in Q4 and letting them have it is hard to stomach.

Yeah, we bent and broke. The huge cushions we were giving those WRs was maddening. I expected way more considering the money that our coaches get paid to game plan and/or adjust.

I’m guessing part of it was to not show too much before halftime so they couldn’t adjust, and the plan resulted in a 17-0 run in second half.
The weakness of the plan was the offense not scoring in 1st half. Got way too far behind.

I think Lane thought we would score more than 7 points in the first half. Hell if we could have scored 14 points in the first half it would have been a different game.

You nailed it. Just had the exact same conversation with my brother. I’m good with starting the game the way we did. We realized that it wasn’t working, and made the necessary adjustments. Those adjustments didn’t just slow them down, it completely shut them down for an entire quarter.

You were getting scorched with game plan X. You dominated with a game plan Y. Then for some reason, abandoned game plan Y to g back to X when it mattered most.

Giving the OM receivers variable amounts of cushion (8-10 yards) on 3rd down and 6-8 was something I've never seen a defense do that didn't have a 2-3 TD lead.
Subsequently, Chambliss threw to the least covered receiver almost every time and was 9 for 9 on third down at one point.
Keeping everything in front,....OK, but that was ridicules. They were literally handing those downs and distance plays. Crazy.
