Tulane beat us in TS that season. It was an up-and-down kind of year. Beating Bama in BHam was the best.

It was a fun year. The night it rained oranges was one of the best in Tiger Stadium history.

Unreal night.

One of the top 5-7 teams in Tiger history. Lost focus at the end against State and Tulane. Let the early victories go to their heads a bit.

We retired the Bear. FSU game was unreal. Losing to Tulane and a tie with TN were the lows.

My first LSU game at 7yrs old. My 3 memories of it are.
1. A fender bender on the way.
2. Sitting under overhang in lower bowl sez.
3. My dad calling a guy in a green shirt walking down the street in front of our car a "Tulane lookin motherfricker!"

I was hooked.

That is what was bad about many of our teams back then. They would always come out flat following big victories. Same vs. State following beating bama, and Tulane following beating the brains out of FSU. that team should have also beaten Penn. St. in the orange bowl game but didn't.

When did this trend end? Hell, 1997 LSU beats No. 1 Florida and then loses by two scores to unranked Mississippi at home on JP. Same team blew the Auburn that year 31-28 and lost to a five-loss Notre Dame (In a stunning 24–6 triumph, the Irish rushed for 232 yards and played their first penalty-free and turnover-free game in program history). 1996 LSU should have gone 11-0...although, I don't think they would have beaten Tennessee in the title game.

In 2003, we beat No. 4 Georgia and then lose to a bad Florida team 19-7 two weeks later with no offensive points all game.

The 1982 team was probably the least talented good team in LSU history. They honestly had no business winning as much as they did. Those guys played way above their level and everybody loved them for it.

1981 team won 3 games
1983 team won 4 games

But somehow the 1982 team went to the Orange Bowl. Go figure.

Yea it seems like they overachieved big time. I bet tiger stadium was fun and loud as hell. I bet you nobody ever left early in any game too.

We have become such a spoiled fan base and it sucks,

That 20-10 Bama victory was a beatdown - way worse than the score indicated. The Orange game against Florida State is one of the top two games in Tiger Stadium history (Canon’s ‘59 Halloween run). And the Tulane game, though a loss, was a great game. I’ll never forget late in the fourth quarter down by a couple, and Garry James took a sweep to the house. And I couldn’t believe they let Reginelli to be covered by our lumbering linebackers man to man. The Orange Bowl was also a loss, but LSU was one suspicious penalty from winning that game when, holding a four point lead, Mike Montz ran for a first at the one yard line. That was ballgame if it doesn’t get called back.

BTW, when you talk about best secondaries in LSU history take a look at 1982. This was a great group.

Gino Daniels - Long time starter for the Colts
Jimmy Britt - Starter for the Falcons
Jeffry Dale - Started for the Chargers
Lifort Hobley - Was the best of the bunch but was undone by drug addiction. Still started for the Dolphins.

Wasn't Mack Brown the OC?

ETA: QB coach.

quote:

In 1982, Brown moved to LSU as the quarterbacks coach. The LSU Tigers improved their record to 8–3–1 from 3–7–1 the year prior in large part due to the Brown's coaching of quarterback Alan Risher, who threw for 1,834 yards with 17 TD and 8 INT. He also completed 63.7% of his pass attempts. Risher had thrown 14 TD in the previous two seasons combined before Brown's arrival.
