For the first year the indicator is team attitude and effort and improvement in offense, defense, and special teams. He's an improvement over Kelly, but to me the 2 big shifts came with Arnsparger and Saban. I don't see enough talent in the trenches to make this a memorable season. I don't know if that can be fixed in one year.

Year 2 or 3. Mfrs need to get a grip. This team was never going to get it all together in year one.

Here's the thing - I was thinking we were a 10-2 team but i didn't think we'd have 2 losses this fast.

meat of our schedule is still to come and I thought Lane Kiffin would go for it on 4th and 1

I didn't think a natty was realistic outcome given the lack of depth on this roster. And that was before I saw Leavitt in this offense. Before I saw that the O line isn't great. I figured the defense would be good but they couldn't afford any injuries and the D line was going to have growing pains.

And look, Blake Baker has this rep as a defensive mastermind. I just haven't seen it. LSU bent over backwards to keep him. I don't know how you justify it. Kentucky ran the same play like 4 times in a row like a dude spamming on a video game. LSU was shocked every time.

On the 2pt try it seemed obvious that a QB run was coming. Spread them out and run it up the gut. Before the snap I knew it was coming and I knew it was over. LSU had nobody in the middle to account for the QB run.

Our 2 losses are both to first year coaches at inferior programs

And they have won how many championships? It is like reasoning with a wall.

Year at most - mainly to get rid of the Kelly stink/mindset. As others have said, with portal and paying players, "development" is horseshite and buggy.

But
You
Don't
Lose
To
Kentucky

I simply do no believe in the term "rebuild" in college sports today. With unlimited freedom of transfers and zero regulated NIL, you neither have to worry about quickly acquiring talent, nor can you use the excuse that you don't have the depth that other teams have, because with the portal and NIL, hardly any players who even think they are good enough to start are willing to sit behind someone else as depth. So every team, every year, is constantly having to replace huge portions of their roster.

We have no excuse because it's "year one" under Kiffin. It's a year to year sport now, so what is more time going to matter? How long did it take Indiana, of all programs, under a new coach? And that's what it comes down to. Coaching. Not who spends the most money, or who has had the most time. The coaching cream rises to the top.

People believing Cignetti is the new norm are stupid.

If you're Kentucky and you're expecting to make the playoffs year one, you could say this. But when you're a program like LSU and you hire a coach who's supposed to be elite, and you pay him 90 million dollars, and you spend 45 million, or whatever it was on the roster, you should absolutely expect to make a 12 team playoff.

How soft do we need to be as a fan base, if we can't expect a program that has won a championship with three different head coaches in the past 23 years, to make a 12 team playoff? That's a layup in comparison to how hard it used to be. But here we are, and we can't even beat Kentucky.

2 years. It doesnt matter how much money you spend. You need super stars, stars, up and coming, back ups, and role players. It takes time to install your scheme. Also you cant have all these portal players from other conferences. Sometimes they shine and sometimes you miss. I much prefer to recruit players from high school and let them grow in the SEC instead of getting players in the portal. I know it's a different game now with NIL and the portal but it just seems that you have a higher chance of missing than you do on hitting in the portal. I believe Lane said something to that also, about wanting Lousiana players more so than portal players but needing to go portal heavy in year 1 to try and fill needs.

With the money in play, immediately. But Lane’s success revolves around the QB. We have a really good QB and a NC roster, but not a NC QB

I thought he could make the playoffs in year one, but that he would not be a serious threat to win it all. I thought year two he could truly challenge for a championship.

Honestly, one season (this season) to get sorted out and the system in place, playoffs 2027 season. Im not super confident that Leavitt will get us there, though. He’s not remotely that caliber of QB yet.
