What do you do when you lose interest in the gym?

A couple of years ago going to the gym was what I looked forward to all day. Went to the gym 4-5 days a week, meal prepped every meal I ate, maybe had 1 cheat meal per week, the whole 9 yards. Loved every minute of it. Then a couple of months before a vacation I decided to go super strict. 0 cheat meals, workout and cardio 6 days a week. When I came back from the vacation the interest was just totally gone.

I figured I was burnt out so I took a break, lifted casually for a while, but it never really came back. I tried a bunch of different programs but never found one I liked, even tried crossfit for a while.

Nowadays I can convince myself to go to the gym maybe twice a week, and when I get there I'm so disinterested that the workout just ends up getting half assed.

I've put on about 25 pounds over the last 2 years, and while I don't look bad I do not like this trend at all. So I've come to the H/F board gods to see if any of you have been through something similar, and what you may have done to overcome it.

Arnold - have a clear vision/goal

This helped(s) me a lot when I’m feeling down—basically, you need to think about why you want to work out and go all out chasing that goal you set for yourself.

Try just a 3 or 4 day schedule and pick a program. If I just go to the gym without a goal, I lose focus and eventually quit. I need a goal.

My go to programs are usually 5/3/1 and the various templates. Have an app on the phone to make it easier to follow and keeps track of my PRs.

Greyskull is popular here as well and a pretty lengthy write-up thread about it.

If you are not in the 1000lbs club right now, there is your first goal

Edit - Currently on page 1, but here is lsu777's 60 page thread on Greyskull

I focus on going there. Just pushing to take that basic step creates momentum and motivation.

Someone asked me a few months when I was lifting 4+ times a week "what's your favorite thing to do at the gym?" and I said "walking out of the door"

I just start doing cardio and HIIT when I'm burned out with weights.

Mix it up, this seems to work for me. I get bored with the same routine in the gym so some days I will just go for a long run or do some hitt just to keep my mind sharp and interested. I even went as far to switch gyms haha. Whatever it takes to keep you moving you owe it to yourself.

I'll be honest. I've done this multiple times in my life. I'm an all or nothing personality. I've had several hobbies/careers where I went all out.. loved it.. made it an event. Eventually burned out.

The one thing I've learned since starting back at the gym is... be committed but dont make it a focal point... I dont "meal prep" anymore I just make my lunch... that sounds like the same thing but it's a different mindset.

When I get ready to go to the gym.. I just go... it's not some big event.

I figure getting it right 80% of the time for a decade is better than 95% for a year.

Set goals for yourself.

Sign up for a 5k/10k/marathon.

Devout yourself to hitting a PR on a lift.

Set a target weight.

Set goals and go out to hit those goals.

You have to set goals. I enjoy weightlifting, but I always have a goal. No matter how much you enjoy doing something, if you don’t set goals, you will lose motivation.

Step 2: Fat shame myself in front of mirror.
Step 3: ?????
Step 4: Get back in the gym. (PROFIT)

1) Pay attention to the people that don't go the gym and mindfully note that by not going to the gym yourself, their body and health is what you're shooting for in 3 years.

2) I also like to cycle 6-8 week programs. I don't necessarily set goals; I just like to make a note of my starting stats and compare to my ending stats after the 6-8 weeks.

For instance, currently I'm trying to improve my squat as it really fell off post knee surgery, and now I've got chicken legs. Doing legs/abs/lower back twice a week now (plus running). In 7 weeks, my weight for 6 rep sets has gone up 60 lbs.

3) Have a partner. I've got a work buddy that goes with me, and we basically hold each other accountable during the week. I also go with my wife at least one day every weekend. Talk with your gym buddies about your goals as well. Don't just keep them in your head where you can back out on them easily.

I either go to the park for a few workouts to break the monotony of seeing the same thing over and over. Do some sprints, agility, calisthenics and enjoy the fresh air.

Recently, just having someone to also hold me accountable. Competing in olympic weightlifting can be a grind so just having a teammate there or taking a few days off to switch the focus can go a long way.

I end up lifting weights, get to a certain amount and feel fat and unathletic.

Then I stop lifting, lose strength abd size and do bodyweights exercises.

Then I hate myself for being weak and do the cycle again.

Sucks and I really dont know how to beat this 6 month cycle mentality

I ride mountain bikes.
Adrenaline+outdoors+solitude+cardio = reset button for me
I'd be a big ball of stress without it
