The thread about smartphones in the gym on the OT got me thinking. I have several pet peeves. I go to a pretty large and popular LA Fitness in Dallas and it’s usually packed. Every day I notice: someone curling or doing bent over barbell rows in the squat rack, someone texting or playing on their phone and taking 5 min between sets, using the incline barbell bench to do their dumbbell press (there’s only two incline barbell benches and 8 dumbbell incline benches) and dumb shite like big muscular guys using all the girl dumbbells at one time (10-25 pounders) for 10 drop sets.

I pay $150/month to go to a gym where you don't have to deal with any of this shite.

I’m at a YMCA that has no scenery. Most of us there seem to know the other guy’s routines and there is seldom an issue. Sometimes a group of young guys, teens, come in and they have to be interrupted from their IG, Snapchat stories, and their narcissistic activities when one of us regulars needs the same eqpt. They apologize and move on.

Using the cable cross machines for single handle exercises. 99/100 there is a single handle machine available.

There’s a lady who jumps rope in the weightlifting area which is weird and kind of dangerous.

Fatties who wear tights

LA Fitness is the worst for this BS. I was in one today as a guest and there were clowns everywhere sitting on equipment playing on their phones etc.
Wish I could go back to the days of my old gym that had biohazards dispensers in the bathrooms and 98% of the people in there were juiced to the gills. People simply worked out and went home. None of the socializing and taking selfies etc.

really my only pet peeve is people doing supersets at the busiest time of day, especially if one of the exercises is on 1 of the 3 squat/bench racks my gym has. also if your superset involves both cables on the 1 cable machine my gym has.

Had a guy get mad at me once because he took two 45 pound plates off the bench rack I was using so he could prop up the sit up bench he used in between sets.

He had two 25 pound plates he wasn't using on his own rack so I swapped them when he was benching.

Complete fricking douche.

My absolute biggest pet peeves are not re-racking weights and not wiping sweat off equipment.

Everything else pales in comparison.

If you leave single plates on the squat or bench bar, that's somewhat acceptable. But anything more than that isn't.

I mean I do bent over barbell rows on a half rack at my gym solely because they follow squat or deadlift and I'm already there. Maybe I'm an a-hole but I don't consider it on par with curls in the squat rack or anything else he listed.

Anything other than squats or deads in the rack is pretty much the same to me. I could give a shite about it really unless the gym is busy and you can take that somewhere else.

I don't really have a lot of pet peeves but I sure would if I was gym owner. I pretty much do my thing in peace and quiet but maybe chuckle under my breath from time to time. However in my fantasy world as a gym owner, you drop a dumbell, you get a warning. You do it again, you are gone. Period. Same principle goes for leaving db's and plates on the floor. Unless your mom is training with you, pick that shite up. Grunting is for women having babies and maybe on your max rep. Otherwise STFU. Chalk is actually ok. Just clean it up and don't leave a crime scene when you are done.

People who treat the gym like a club. The other day this guy had his 2 friends and wife following him around everywhere. The wife was carrying a purse the size of a beach bag and he actually tripped over it.

Not re-racking weights

Taking weights from your equipment without asking

People who think they are doing a full squat, but are really 1/4 to 1/2 squats. Half squats are legit, but you know the people I am talking about.

no racking weights pisses me off, but worse than that are the people who do rack but with no idea or concept of order.

walking up to a weight stand and seeing a 45 behind two 10's and a 25. its like, wtf, did this really make any sense to you? i feel like this has to be done with maliciousness in mind or they are the dumbest bastards around.

using the squat rack for other exercises other than squats and deads, but only if its busy and all racks are taken.

1/4 squats when the bar is absolutely loaded with weight too much weight and lat pull downs with the person basically jerking their entire upper body to get it down just makes me shake my head. why?

Squat rack is for squats, deads, barbell lunges, etc, not your biceps or rows. Squat racks are limited and if you’re curling or doing rows in it, I wanna hit you in the face with a plate

The little town I live in has one gym. It only has one squat rack and, even worse, it's a Smith Machine. Nothing used to piss me off worse than going in on leg day and somebody using it for bench press and curls.

About half the time, I used to just improvise and move a bench around and use it as a squat rack, but I always thought it was BS that I had to do that.

I also used to get annoyed when the douchey young dudes would all hang out in front of the mirror behind the DB racks. It would aggravate the piss out of me to ask somebody if I could get by them to grab or put up some DBs.

Glad I dropped the money and have my own stuff in the garage now. My wife's car is the only thing I have to deal with now.

I get your point but the gym I go to is small and has 4 half racks on platforms and 2 full racks. There aren't any other "open" areas to do barbell work due to sled pulling/pushing, boxing, or small classes going on. Plus there's usually always another rack open.

I can get to the gym right at 5:30pm and almost always get right onto a rack. I have no problem paying more ($75/month) to get a quicker workout in without having to wait for other people.
