I agree. Hack squats, leg press, other exercises that are alot safer

Find me a legitimate need of the average person needing to squat or deadlift? I’ll wait. You can build strength through other movements

I would argue the average person needs to squat and deadlift (with good form and slow progression) in their workouts way more than the elite athlete. Its by far the best bang for the buck for someone who is natural and doesn't have 5 days/week for 2 hour gym sessions.

For someone that can do long workouts and is enhanced, yes, they can do multiple other exercise with a ton of volume to replace squats.
Sure

this is total nonsense. The studies on muscle hypertrophy don’t support your thesis for number of reps, and with good form and proper precautions there is no reason at all to avoid those movements.

You are right. I’ve only had customized diet and work out plans written by 4 IFFB Pro’s and not a single one had Deadlifts in their training program.

2/4 had squats but they could have been subbed out for another exercise

Isn't it a spotter's job to say "Hey, man. Don't do this..."?

That's what I look for in a spotter.

No a spotter has three main jobs:

1) push you to lift more weight for gains

2) help you do so safely

3) tell you a fat arse girl walked in and is doing split dumbell squats.

Whenever I used to squat heavy i did several things. Used a smith machine rack or a true squat rack that if I fell forward the rack would catch the weight.
I never squatted that heavy that one spotter couldn’t assist or if was real heavy I had a guy on each end of the bar.
Damn shame. I’m definitely not watching

That was too much weight for any spotter to do anything helpful.
Once that much weight gets moving either forward or backwards, you aren't stopping it. unfortunately it went forward.
Even if there were two spotters on each end of the bar waiting for it to fall, they would have done nothing to stop that. It happened so quickly.
Just an unfortunate incident. Although as many others have said, could have easily been avoided had he used actual safety measures instead of relying on his own legs, or another humans arms to prevent that disaster.

I’m happy you found a program that works for you.

I’m also sure you are overstating the risks and underplaying the rewards of compound movements. It’s also worth stating not everyone has the fitness goal to be a bodybuilder.

I've worked out extensively in the past, mostly alone. I have squatted 400 plus pounds for reps many times but would not push it too much knowing I didn't have a spot.
This guy was a veteran lifter(looking at his picture in article) and probably only went for that extra rep because he had a spotter to assist.
I blame the spotter 100%, either he wasn't paying attention or he didn't know what the hell he was doing.

That dude killed the lifter. You can't pick up 50 pounds like that much less help a guy ditch a 425lb squat.

He’s been called out by many people in the industry this week. I do feel sorry for him; he has to feel terrible about it. He should, however, never be allowed to spot again.

This is the truth. He uses an obviously incorrect method of spotting. He also taught that to many of his members/clients. His socials are littered with it. I’ll still never understand why some big dollar gyms don’t have proper squat racks with the adjustable safety arms. If you can squat it, just let it rest on the arms and duck walk out.

I searched for and watched the video. Communication between the lifter and spotter would have possibly saved him. God bless his soul.

literally has nothing to do with the average person

so the average person doesnt need to be able to squat? i didnt say it had to be with a barbell but its a basic pattern. need to be able to do it to just get off the god damn toilet

start with bodyweight, then landmine, then goblet then barbell

and hinge is same way

average person isnt a fricking bodybuilder, nor should they train like one.

go read barbell prescription and get back to me. you literally dont know shite when it comes to training gen pop clients and programming for them, nor do you understand progressions and regressions, efficient training for time etc

im all for using hack squats, leg pressing etc but stop acting like squats is some dangerous exercise, same with deadlift because they arent.

just a bunch of peopel who dont know wtf they are doign get hurt because they do not know wtf they are doing

btw bench kills more people in the weight room than any other lift.

This is just stupid. Squats even when done with light weight have a lot of positive benefits to your whole body. Squats are a total body workout if done properly. Most people don't do them properly. This moron is dead because he was more concerned with filming himself than using a cage with sidebars or a squat rack with sidebars.

One of two ways:

Squat with safety bars and just set it down if you fail, or learn to bail from a back squat.

The average person doesn’t squat at all and gets off the toilet fine…

There is literally no argument to be made that an average joe needs to be doing squats unless powerlifting or some type of competitive athletic performance. You can get stronger and improve phsyique without them.

Most orthopedics would agree

Studies out now showing correlation between longevity, geriatric health and ability to squat. It’s not only a functional movement, it’s a fundamental movement.

no they dont, not as they get older. go read mark rippetoe and andy bakers books and go read bakers barbell prescription. go read all the work from the medical doctors at barbell medicine.

umm its a foundational movement pattern. every single person should be able to squat and hip hinge

nobody said you couldn't. i didnt say the squat or deadlift is the best lifts if your goals are only aesthetics but i will tell you that guys like dante trudal, john meadows, paul carter, scott stevenson, mike israetel etc will tell you that building a base the first couple years of training using the main compound movements will set you up for much better success long term. hell even greg o gallager has deads in his programming. look at martin berkham... hell even arnold

bottomline is you have frickarounitus and you sound like a giant puss when it comes to programming.

most think that weight lifting has a higher chance of injury compared to sport when its the opposite so wtf do they know. surgically repairing something doesnt make you an expert on preventing injury.

you can't fake the look you get from heavy squats and deadlifts.

Dude was a dummy about it. Plenty of folks are able to squat/deadlift safely.
