PSA: If you don’t know how to properly spot someone, don’t offer to spot them.

I’m sure there will be some darwin jokes but it really is a shame. Guy is dead because some gym bro didn't know what he was doing. You can find the video but I’m not posting it.

HOLY shite

For squat spotting, aren't you supposed to support their chest as they rise?

Darwin? Maybe, but this is probably a situation where he trusted the wrong person. Sucks either way, and I do not want to see the video.

Should have told him earlier.

IDK about that. If the weights are too heavy, I imagine the lifter could just drop them. The spotter basically held the weights in place and forced the guy to get crushed.

How hard is it to use a cage, especially on a heavy lift

1. I put the bar much lower on my back. There's a natural ledge where the traps end and the lats begin.

2. Where were the safety arms?

I’m not watching the video but at that weight there is no reason to not be squatting inside pins or straps.

Safety arms would have saved his life.

Spotter was never in the position to actually help him nobody in the world could have helped in the position the spotter was in. All the spotter did was prevent him from being able to roll the weight off, the spotter has serious fault here.

His body looked like this was a personal max because of the way he was reacting to the weight at over 450# he should have had three spotters and SAFETY ARMS.

This. Add more weight before you call 911.

Correct. There shouldn’t even be a spotter here—drop the weight off your back to the rear and step forward.
Alternatively, squat in a rack and just squat all the way down to the safety arms

I can’t watch shite like that but I’m assuming he wasn’t isjing a split rack which would have allowed to bar from crashing to the floor?? I agree a spotter can only provide very minimal help to prevent some one squirting that much weight once

Let me guess: he was using a Smith machine that had a fixed bar path and had no safeties.
