My thinking is kind of the opposite of a lot of what you hear. People are always saying that since it is not the PGA tour or big money, they are going to roll the ball.
My feeling is that, since there’s really nothing riding on it, I’m just gonna just hit it where it is unless there is risk of injury to a club or me.

On the occasion that I’ve had a bad break during a “real” match I've been able to deal with it better. Various lies don’t bother me much anymore, and who cares if I shoot a stroke worse in a casual round? Besides, on casual rounds the biggest joy is pulling off a good shot, so there’s the satisfaction of hitting a good approach out of a divot or whatever.

Good way to look at it.

I play it down. Only time I get frustrated is when I get a mud ball in the fairway.

Biggest advantage with “fluffing” is around the greens. IMO fluffing can save 3 or more strokes per round.

Agree 100%. My scramble percentage goes way up when playing it up. We play it up when its carts path only, otherwise we play it down.

Like I said above, ground under repair and with bad bunkers, my group is pretty liberal on that situation.

A huge footprint in a bunker agreed, obvious GUR agreed, risk of injury eh I’d say take unplayable as pros would have to do the same. Their balls end up against roots all the time.

Biggest thing to affect a handicap is putting everything out.

To each his own I guess. I golf and have played in all the local tournaments also and I find that playing it as it lies is much more difficult and makes me play better. Just don’t say you shot XYZ if you are getting perfect lies on every shot. It’s not a legit score.

Play it as it lies is probably the single most important rule in golf.
Anything else is straight up cheating.

Nah. Depends on skill level and why you're playing.

If tracking handicap or playing for cash, yes absolutely.

Otherwise, rule #1 in golf (or any other sport) is to have fun. If you are too pretentious to enjoy a round or play in a foursome with someone just out to enjoy the game (while maintaining pace of play), then you're likely a miserable human and detrimental to the game of golf despite your lofty thoughts about yourself.

Simple… if money is on the line it’s by USGA rules. If it’s not who gives AF.

You misunderstand. I don’t mind you fluffing your lie but don’t be the guy talking about how you normally shoot scratch but today you are bit off and I see you taking your club and gently rolling your ball around for the perfect lie.

Perfectly said. The grass is growing, and the rough is thick where I play. You should be rewarded for hitting the ball in the fairway and our fairways still have a few thin spots.

I’m not trying to be an arse here, and I definitely don’t mind when my playing partners bump the ball, but as I said before I look at it differently.

You should be rewarded for being able to hit the ball fairly cleanly from a variety of lies ( tight, bare, fluffy, etc - not talking about tree roots here).

Since shooting 1-2 strokes higher in a casual round isn’t hurting me any, I play them down. It’s has definitely made me a better ball striker, and even hitting out of a divot is easier than it used to be. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck to end up there so I get why people bump it. But if I do that, how will I ever learn to hit an approach out of a divot?

I just try to think of it as an opportunity to get better.

But you already are, by getting to hit out of short grass as opposed to longer grass between your ball and the club face.

Being rewarded for a hitting the fairway =/= a perfect lie every time. Do you count lip-outs as makes to reward yourself for hitting a good putt?

I agree with most, but obviously the course condition matters most when either playing it down everywhere vs up in the fairways and down elsewhere. But bumping in the rough is not at all real golf.

I've played golf for 25 years now, A LOT of golf. Played competitively for quite some time too. If I had to guess, easily over 1,000 rounds of golf. That I can remember, I don't think my ball has ever landed in a divot off the tee. Maybe it has. But it's pretty much a non issue. But somehow you're landing in divots on a regular basis? That's some bad luck.
