What are y’all’s thoughts on lie fluffing? I don’t mind if a person does it but don’t talk
about what score you shoot.

Play however you want to and not worry what other people are doing. This isn’t the PGA tour where everything is manicured.

Play it up...no one I’m playing with is hitting the Tour anytime soon.

Do it if you want, doesn’t matter to me unless it’s a legitimate tournament.

I prefer the ball be lying directly on the ground. A fluffy lie just adds another variable.

If you’re in a situation where the you’re in the fairway and you’re on some shitty bare spot or like a Bermuda runner, I’ve got no problem with getting to some good grass. I don’t believe in punishment for good shots in casual rounds.

Play it down in the rough or sand unless injury or damaged equipment is a possibility. In that case, just be reasonable.

Live everyone else said, we ain’t going to the tour.

We ain’t playing for a green jacket baw. I don’t get to play golf that much anymore so I’m gonna enjoy the few rounds I get to play. But like most have said a good shot shouldn’t be penalized.

Agreed goose you sound like a fun guy to play golf with. Painting a different scenario if you’ve got a guy in your regular group who is the low handicapper and you’re working strokes off that if you’re a high handicap and he’s fluffing up iron shots in the rough that’s a distinct advantage on his end. The thread title caught my eye because we’ve got one of those in our golf text thread and I suck at golf lol

We are talking 2-3 inch Bermuda rough

The only reason it should matter to anyone personally is if they want to be able to compete in tournaments. Meaning member member or member guest type shite.

The 8 handicap that plays it down is going to destroy the 8 handicap that plays it up.

So if you want to be able to compete I’m those events, play it down.

We play it down in the rough and up in the fairway. Works for us.

Unless you're playing for money or tournament it shouldn't matter at all. If you are gambling or gaming it up with your friends just decide / announce up or down ahead of time but I am not a fan of mixing it up and playing it up some places and down another (except for bunkers).

No problem with all bunkers being lift, rake and place or a one shot unplayable option and either up or down everywhere else. If you do play it up just keep it in the same area (rough stays in rough, fringe stays on fringe, hard pan stays close but moved to a patch of grass if found is okay).

Play however you like but don’t play it up all day then add a couple to your score on GHIN. That’s just the worst of both.

Up in fairway down in the rough.

No … weekend golf is not the PGA Tour, but improving one’s lie in the rough or in the trees leads to guys going from improving the lie to getting out from behind a tree to create a shot they otherwise would not have. If you have bets against them, then accurate shots in the fairway should be rewarded over someone that just bombs it everywhere since there are no consequences of a bad shot

My club keeps it simple, carts on path and you can lift clean and place, 90 degree rule, play it as it lies.

We play it down in our games unless it’s wet/muddy. If our bunkers are bad, we’ll rake and replace, but they’ve been good so.

What if the tournaments you play in that use GHIN normally play it up? Wouldn't you be doing yourself (and everyone else) a dis-service by only entering rounds that you played it down?

Nope. Depends on if it’s a casual round or competitive round. Causal, play any way you choose & have fun.

Competition follows agreed upon rules.

I’m old, I’m just out trying to relax. If I want to play it up everywhere I will. Most public courses you almost have to. Raking a bunker and placing it back is a common occurrence.
