Thoughts when hitting fairway woods

I have a hard time trying to swing this club erratically. I have hit some really nice, long 5 woods when I slow down and take it easy. But k have also hit a giant divot three inches behind the ball. What are some drills or thoufghts you have when using these clubs? ...
