Color me shocked that a product that has drawn the ire of reddit is losing a poll online

It very well may. Time will tell with that.
Sheer volume of selling the hardware doesn't guarantee Xbox or Sony a profit.
Xbox makes tons of money off of it's extra services on Live and that's obviously what they are gunning for here. Maximizing that revenue stream in their best markets. It really doesn't take a genius to figure it out unless you are wearing fanboy shades.
