And again, we have Indian, we have Korean, just because we dont have 100 Indian restaurants isnt indicative of a lack of ethnic food. And the original question where new orleans should rank for dining?

Dollar for dollar, New Orleans is tough to beat in America.

Per capita NOLA is #1.

NYC #1 overall.

Do they? I'm certainly not arguing with you. Everytime we hit New Orleans, we stay with the usual circuit plus some recent, newer restaurants (Clancys, Commanders, Herbsaint, Cochon, August, Domenica, Brigtsens, Mr. B's).

I've been wanting to try Peche and Shaya, but haven't been back in a while. I'm aware Shaya is an Israeli restaurant and New Orleans has a thriving Vietnamese scene.

I haven't seen much Thai, Indian, Chinese, TexMex, Korean, Sushi, Ramen, even BBQ since I've been down there. I'm certainly not implying that it doesn't exist, I just haven't come across it. That being said, as a visitor, I haven't really sought it out either.

For me its

1-San Francisco*
2-New Orleans*
3a-New York
3b-Seattle

Depending on how I'm feeling San Francisco and New Orleans often switch positions.

No one has mentioned DC in this thread so I will throw that in too.

Not sure where it ranks in the Top 5/10, but they have variety if that is what you are after.

There are a couple restaurants of these styles. Some more than others.

BR has these options too, so I don't know what having the option proves.

Per Capita it's an easy number 2 behind Monroe.

Options factor into how you are judging the city when you rate it. If you want variety and a number of options, there are other cities in the U.S. you want to visit. If you want to experience a unique cuisine that is without question ranked among the best in the world, and culture that is not successfully duplicated in any other city, New Orleans is clearly number 1 in that regard.

Per capita it has to be top 5. I think it gets a nod over a city like Houston in that it has it's own culture and cuisine. I do think NYC has to be #1 though.

Jagerhaus

we don't have Russian food

Most good sushi restaurants will do their take on an Omakase.

we don't have Polish food neither.

I guess the true answer is NOLA is lacking eastern european food, or just European in general other than French and Italian.

I can name good Ethiopian and Korean places, but don't know where to get Eastern European food.

Easily top 3. What other city in the U.S. Has such a distinctive culinary identity that is regionally unique? Even the other states along the coast that have had access to most of the same primary resources to work with (i.e., the seafood) don't have nearly the cultural identity our cooking displays.

"The highest it could be rated is #4 IMO

NYC, SF and Chicago are the top 3

After that, the debate begins."

Bingo. New Orleans has the most culturally distinctive cuisine, but can't touch the volume of options both domestic and international offered by these other places. I'd actually put D.C, Boston/Cambridge, LA, and Vegas ahead of NOLA as well, and I friggin love NOLA dining scene. It's just a little narrow in scope.

I appreciate the New Orleanian passion, but this is funny.

New Orleans is a top five, but it earns that through its unique food culture.

NOLA is not even in the same league as NY. i mean they have their OWN catagory at the James Beard Awards. NY, Paris and Tokyo are in a complete class of their own. I would put the rankings like this:

NY

any order:
Chicago
San Fran
LA

any order:
NOLA
Vegas
Portland
Houston

NYC
Chicago
San Francisco

These are top 3 imo. Nola fits in number 4 or 5.

No.

I think pretty much every food critic alive would put a top 4 of NY, SF, Chicago, NOLA. NOLA gets on their because its the only one with a wholly original and distinct food culture.

After that you can argue a lot of places.
