re: What would you consider a “lavish” meal price-wise?

I agree that alcohol (and its huge mark-up) plays a part in the total price, if you only look at total price to determine "lavish."
Assuming an a la carte menu, dinner for two, here's what we are okay with doing occasionally:
$60 entree x 2 = $120
$20 sides x 3 to share = $60 (or 2 sides at $20 and 1 appetizer at $15-20)
No dessert
Cocktails 2 each at 15-20 each = $60
or one bottle of wine at $95 (4 glasses -- 2 each), but could go for 2 bottles ....
This adds up to about $280-300 for a very nice meal and good drinks or wine. Above what we usually spend, but happy to do this (and happy that we can) sometimes.

I’d happily cover my alcohol bill if the schmuck I was with didnt want to. I’m gainfully employed. Certainly wouldn’t “one glass and that’s it!!!!” life.

Let? She is a grown woman

Same. If my husband ever said he’d “let me” have something, I’d remind him that my father has been dead for over 20 years, and even my father’s power to “let me” have or do anything was gone long before that.
Let us pray.
Let us pray.

Yeah MAJOR red flag that the guy footing the bill won’t let his wife order multiple overpriced glasses of wine.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't "let" my wife do anything, and she doesn't "let" me do anything either. We're both adults

We'll go somewhere nice and i'll tell my wife you can have one glass of wine, that's it,
I think if my dining companion said that to me, I would leave and "let" him dine alone. Permanently.

If I tried to pull that my wife would laugh, order an entire bottle, and finish it in front of me out of spite.

You might have a happier night if she had more than one glass.

So what won't you LET your wife do? Seems like she should have a mind of her own and not be treated like a child. That's the MAJOR red flag!

All you women who are offended, I don't agree with that guy on the glass of wine, but maybe once a year I will outright refuse to take out my wallet at the table.
Why?
Because everyone always assumes I'm paying. And they may say thank you, but the collective happiness throughout the year isn't a tenth of how annoyed everyone is when they find out they are covering the food. And mine.
I'd just like the occasional offer of payment without my forcing their hand.

We'll this ought to be the dumbest thing I read today.

Who is everyone? If it’s your immediate family, isn’t that the way it should be? If it’s just random friends, etc., then you’re a spineless sap.
I find the whole “let your wife thing” to be odd too. My wife doesn’t work, so I’m the only one who can pay. However, I’m not a cheapskate, so I’m not telling my wife she can only have one drink.

No too mention point of lavish meals with your SO is kind of a trade off. You spoil them for a few hours, drop some coin, get them drunk, then go home and reap the benefits. I can't imagine the benefits of the "one glass and that's it!" approach are very good.

Wife. Mother in law. Sister in law.
Grand mother in law always wants to pay.
Wife makes more than I do.
Sister in law does a well.
I just sit there and let the awkwardness grow. It isn't the money. I just want the offer to occasionally be on the table without forcing their hands
Or...and this is crazy... One of them try to pay before I can.

I wouldn't think twice about covering the tab on pretty much any amount for my friends. They would do the same. If anything we avoid it simply because we believe in going above and beyond.

200+ for two is plenty lavish for me. I’ve spent 200ish solo once in Vegas and kinda felt stupid afterwards.
I’m not counting drinks. Don’t drink anymore but could imagine a much higher tab at a super nice place if we were.

4 of us went out Thursday for dinner at a new place in town.
Meal was $356.00 before booze, total tab was just shy of $600.
I thought everything was fantastic but at that price it's a special occasion only kind of place
