As a young lad, it was chocolate meringue but now days, it’s probably lemon meringue but only my Mama’s lemon meringue. Her’s for the chocolate meringue, as well. For years, around the holidays, she’d take pie orders and make those mentioned, as well as pumpkin, pecan, sweet potato, coconut and others. Your post actually made me a bit sad. Mama’s 93 years old and we’re having a bit of a time with her. Her pie baking days are probably over but then I remembered, I have her recipes for the lemon, chocolate and coconut. While I’m not much of a baker, I’m going to invest some time seeing if I can turn out, at least, a passable recreation of her pies. Thanks for reminding me that I had those recipes tucked away! :)

My wife makes my favorite cake that was my grandmother's recipe. Sometimes it makes me smile, sometimes it makes me sad, but it always brings back memories. You won't regret the time you spend giving those pies your best shot. You just may make mama proud.

Pumpkin and apple in the fall. Butterscotch and pecan in the winter. Buttermilk chess, cherry, and lemon meringue in the spring. Lemon icebox and key lime in the summer.

My parents moved to 3 miles away from Tippins Pies in Tulsa when I was at LaTech in the 80's. Tippins was like the 31 Flavors of Ice Cream, except Pies.
The front half of the restaurant was 1//2 or whole pies to go. The back half was a dine in, sit down, upscale homestyle restaurant featuring savory pies like Shepherds Pie. Of course the dessert menu was a big appeal too.
Black Bottom Pecan Pie and Dixie Pie were my favorites. Both were like 2 pies at once. Thick chocolate base with a pecan pie on top, or a more creamy base with pecan pie afloat.

It's probably easier to list the pies I'm not fond of. Like rhubarb pie and shoo fly pie. Have you ever had mince meat pie? I'm not a fan but there are members of my family who love it so it's always around during the holidays.
I love pecan pie and pumpkin pie; coconut cream pie and banana cream pie. I love all kinds of fruit pies. Growing up in northern Indiana I had apple pie more than anything else. I love a good Dutch apple pie with the crumb topping but they're all good. Try eating a slice in a bowl with milk like cereal for breakfast sometime.
I love strawberry pie as much as anything. I love the classic style with fresh strawberries in some gelatinous suspension covered in whipped cream. But my mom used to make a baked strawberry pie that was just amazing. The strawberries took on a deep reddish-brown color. It might have been visually off-putting if you were used to the traditional strawberry pie but the depth of flavor was surprisingly good.

Pumpkin or sweet potato pie is my favorite.
But Champagnes bakery in Henderson makes a blackberry pie that is right up there with them and may be the best pie I’ve ever had.

Coconut cream
Key Lime
Cherry (with 2 types of cherries)
Peach and blueberry
Crust is extremely important and very few restaurants make crust anywhere near as good as my wife’s.
