washing raw chicken after purchase

I've always wash raw chicken after purchase before cooking. I recently read this practice is unnecessary. What do you do?

I've never washed chicken.

It’s not only unnecessary- it is considered dangerous and unsanitary because you splash raw chicken droplets about.
Stop washing chicken.

I agree it's unnecessary and leads to contamination.
That said, people mishandled poultry and other meats all across the country daily. If there was even a mild chance that these contamination would lead to disease, people would be dropping dead left and right.

I never do it. I find it odd, and never understood why someone would.

Choke it, wash it, repeat.

I never wash chicken. In theory, washing is beneficial. In actuality, washing is pointless 99.9% of the time.
As mentioned, studies have shown that washing typically causes the consumer to splash raw chicken on your surfaces.

Only if you’re eating it raw

Brine it if you feel you have to clean it for whatever reason.
Putting it under the faucet like you are washing an apple or tomato is fricking stupid.

How so?

It can wash any dirt or foreign material off the surface of the chicken.
In reality, that’s just not an issue.
Vegetables and fruit….always wash. They grow outside in dirt and bacteria lives in dirt. They are also not packaged well and can get dirty due to no packaging. And you don’t always cook them to kill bacteria.
Chicken is washed during processing and packaged. Any bacteria that may be present on the surface will be killed during cooking. You may have dirt or whatever present but not likely.
There is no harm in washing chicken (except for as the study suggested, you can spread bacteria on your surfaces). But washing chicken is an old wives’ tale.

Yep. Chances are you’ll be fine if you do wash it (as someone mentioned, most people cross contaminate to at least some extent and are fine), but there’s no real benefit.
It’s a big thing in Asian cultures because their chicken is purchased in much less sanitary conditions.

It is not safe. You are spreading nasty arse chicken juices all over your sink

I used to rinse it and never got sick. Then I heard to just dry it with paper towels and now I do that and haven’t gotten sick. I’ve seen a hundred posters on this board say “If in doubt, throw it out,” so maybe you’d best just throw it in the trash right now. Why risk it? ;)

Its pretty easy to wash and then simply clean up afterwards.

Sometimes I will rinse a pork chop if it has bone dust slurry on it. I can't think of another reason to wash meat.

I don't wash an air-dried chicken, but I do rinse and pat dry the typical grocery store chickens that are in a bag of slimy water. I don't splash it around like the idiots the no-wash warnings are for, and I'm going to clean the hell out of the sink and counter after cutting up the chicken anyway.

I’ve never washed chicken.

The only chicken I ever wash is when I get a whole chicken and occasionally there’ll be some feather or gunk on it. Do it in one sink, sanitize the hell out of it afterward.
