Try Big Jake's in St. Gabriel. Only open 11-2 M-F.

It's not Lockhart, but they do a pretty good job.

Yeah because the locals have great food taste.

But I do agree it's average.

Hell I went to a place called Smokey Joe's in Hammond last weekend. Great atmosphere with outdoor seating and a band. Very average meat, but it was a good time.

If you want the best bbq smoked meat in the area, Gonzo's in Luling. It's amazing. But the atmosphere is like a doctor's office in a third world country and the hours are frustrating. Lunch only, thursdays and fridays.

Thurs is smashburger day, fri is brisket, burnt ends, boudin, etc... Go Friday if you can. It is darn good.

Also, the employees are the nicest and hardest working people. I don't mean to demean them with my comments about the atmosphere. I just wish they had a few tables out front or up on the levy.

I've had some decent BBQ at Pimanyoli's too but they also have weird hours. I think it's only open for lunch.

I hope this place gets run into the ground, please don't support that shitty family. They opened one in Mobile, AL and closed the restaurant with no notice, and upon being interviewed on the news said something to the effect "sorry guess you gotta find another job" extremely tone deaf response.

The worst barbque I have ever had at a barbque restaurant. I would take a microwaved chipped beef out of a tub on a white bun over.

So where does one find better than average BBQ in the greater Baton Rouge area?

I’m embarrassed but I like Couyons in Port Allen. But it’s not all that consistent.

ruger35 - you don't think a TX style BBQ joint could make a go for it in BR? There's so much cross-pollination from oil & gas between LA-TX. It would seem to be a ripe market.

This is the answer! Central Texas style is the way to go. MS, GA, Al, and, FL types of BBQ has too much sweetness for my taste. Give me meat, smoke and a option of sauce on the side.

Gonzo's is the best in the state and its not even close, but its mostly just a pop=up

i like going to the shed in ocean springs, its fun and the food is decent. nobody with any sense compares it to TX/lockhart style BBQ.

as part of a visit to the MS gulf coast its a great stop

I love really good “real” barbecue. But a barbecue restaurant can make it as long as they are consistent and good. They don’t need to be great.

Side dishes are also a big part of keeping customers happy. Don’t try to get creative. Just offer sides done right.

I love Podnuh’s. Is it great barbecue? Absolutely not, but it’s pretty consistent, it’s good food, and the sides are simply good sides done right.

I think the Memphis style BBQ that The Shed seems to feature is too sweet for the most part. Same with the handful of popular BBQ joints here.

I do agree that the Texas style setup would do better.

I founded Smokin Aces BBQ.

Didn't know that, I figured it went the other way around. Either way it sounds like the new iteration has nothing in common besides the name.

In Baton Rouge, my favorites have been:
- Smoking Aces
- Hannah Q
- Memphis Mac

There was something with promise going on at Bayou Smokehouse on Coursey, but it’s ruined now with whatever happened with the owners of the building.

A great Texas-style bbq place would work well in Baton Rouge but we’ve yet to get one.

There's Jim's Texas Smokehouse in Baker. I love the ribs. Best smoked chicken I've had. I never thought sausage was a good way to judge BBQ joints, and I don't eat brisket outside of Texas..

i'm gonna disagree...
"great tx style BBQ" means you open and 10am and close when the meat's gone. if you are the only place in the city doing that, regardless of how good it is, it will never be more than a niche food-truck type place.

nobody wants to cook mediocre BBQ, but to be open all day/night every day it pretty much has to be that.

This right here. Any bbq place that does otherwise is going to be mediocre at best.

I like Hanna Q, but dont go there expecting smoke flavor. Still a great place and I enjoy their sides.

The Shed will probably be one of the better options in BR... but their Ocean Springs location has gotten worse over the years.

Oh. I just went along with what the newspaper said. The one in DS is good, though.
