Automatic Slims Tonga Club, just out the side door from the Peabody. Just outstanding. And the vibe is good too. 11-3
Did a 10-day jaunt through London - Paris - Rome 2 years ago. I did fine with my old clodgy suitcases. I noticed our Pro tourguide - who is gone most of the year travelling - used the bag linked below. He says he had never had a moment's trouble with it, and used it instead of a suitcase - personals and all. LINK

If you looking for a good breakfast spot try Mr. Mamas

Seconding Mr. Mamas. About 2 miles off strip, but well worth it. Appears to be family run, and the chicken fried steak for breakfast makes it obvious that they've at least been to Texas! And for the half-dozen times we have been there for breakfast, we have never stood in a line. Never tried their lunch - but that's next time.
At LSU in the 70s, loved the Uncle Ben's Fried Chicken on Nicholson, and the Mickey's Golden Nugget that took its place there. Sure wish someone would use that old Uncle Ben's recipe on some modern day chicken...
I worked for the Danny's in Denham Springs for a bit. It was owned by the Feske family - absolutely stellar people! I seasoned the raw chicken before it was put in the cooler, where it 'marinated' at least overnight. When needed, the chicken was dipped in wash, floured up and fried. The onion rings there were handcut every morning, coated with the same wash and flour that covered the chicken and fried to order. Mrs. Clara made the cole slaw fresh each morning, and Mrs Bernice used chicken gizzards in the dirty rice, also fresh made each day. This was in the late 70s, so I am sure everything has changed. But that family insisted on good products and good service. And I hope there is still a Dannys around that still has that affection for product and service..

re: GMC Acadia. Likes. Dislikes. ?

After my second Dodge Ram died at 200k+ miles, it was time to downsize. I am 6'7" and have to try on cars. Not only for legroom, but to see if my head hits the ceiling and lets me comfortably see out the front. The Acadia was the only car that actually fits me comfortably. I was skeptical about the smaller engine, laughed at its 'turbo' moniker, but the power it has surprised me. More than once, my wife has fussed about me 'peeling out' for quick entries into traffic.. The rearmost seats are almost useless for adults, but four people can ride comfortably. Fuel economy - coming from a pickup - is what dreams are made of. From just below a quarter tank, a fillup is $35.

Dislikes - the push button transmisson! I keep reaching for the shift lever that's not there.. As for long term service, I bought it at 17K and am just reaching 24K, so no long track record there. But for the moment I am quite happy.
I always loved Ball's Cajun Seasoning from the Lake Charles area. Always seemed to be a smoother blend of the salt with the other spices. See it on Amazon sometimes, but would love to pick it up at a store. Their distribution seems inconsistent.

re: Looking to buy a new TV

Measure the viewing distance from your normal seat to the screen. Now measure your screen diagonally. In the store, stand the same distance from the screen, and see which one looks the best. If your TV is not sitting in a tight cabinet, go up one size and see which one looks best to your eye, and get that one.

Understand that not all these display TVs are 'set up' for optimum viewing by the store, but you can judge pretty well anyway.

Don't be fooled by the splendidly sharp 4K pictures!! They are running video files produced just for the showroom. It will be years before you will be getting 4K streams like that into your home TV. Rig for Standard HD for the next 5 years.

For me, I tend to go with LGs first and Samsung second. This after seeing LG worldwide in hotels seeing heavy use each day. If I were a rich baller, I would go with Sony, but that's Michael Jackson money there. Maybe one day. That said, the TCLs that Walmart sells have come a long way in picture quality and longevity.
Keying off the interest in cars. There is a International Trucking Festival in Interlaken, Switzerland in June. Wife and I went there only because our son was playing in a performing band there and she wanted to see the boy performing in the Alps. They use a closed airport and completely line it with trucks - some which look like trucks I only dreamed about. Two miles of steel, tires, and guys wearing big belt buckles they got off Amazon. And damned proud of them too. Huge festival around it. Hats, boots, booty shorts. Funniest thing was Europeans lined up to take their turn on the Line Dance floor! There are little niche things to do if you look. Here is the link for this little side trip: Interlaken
The answer is Jennifer Donelan. Great journalist.

One of my cousins will powderize Ritz Crackers to include in the filling. Adds a little salt flavor and some buttery background flavors. Its a nice touch.

Cozy Corner for ribs, cornish game hen or bologna sammiches. Close to St Jude. Pies there are wonderful too.
My wife pulls it apart and puts it in her chicken and dumplings. Saves a big step and adds flavor!
To catch up. The house was constructed after the 2016 flood, so its 8-9 years old. We are in the Watson area. Termites are certainly a possibilty.
Just did. Thanks for all ya'lls patience.

Yeah, that's what the pics should do. Still working...

Home Repair, Not Who But 'Who To Call'

Posted by robchand58 on 5/26/25 at 11:35 am
Some damage has popped up on my house. I know nothing, but I know its too small for a contractor to handle. But would a handyman do, or out of his range? Trying to figure out what level of home repair to pursue. Home is 8 years old, and don't know how damage occurred. Thanks for all your help.

Newspapers are getting harder to find en bulk, and my wife hates me storing them through the year. What are the in-the-know folks moving to? And thank you!

Just saw Mama Seabell, and she is doing well. Says to say hi to all her babies and she loves all of you. She's was out of circulation for two months due to cancer therapy, but is back among us and did a huge feed for a small group yesterday, 4-11-25. Her spirit has never faltered, and that voice can still cut like a knife. Making good progress on her cookbook, even as she faces another round of chemo soon...

How Much Local Currency To Take

Posted by robchand58 on 4/3/25 at 3:30 pm
Wife and I are joining a tour through Ireland and Scotland at the end of the month. Should spend 5 days in each country. We realize that one takes pounds and the other Euros. Question: roughly how much of each should we take with us to avoid the ATM fees overseas?

re: Outdoor Antenna

Posted by robchand58 on 3/9/25 at 8:58 pm to
Much depends on where you live. The BTR market is split between VHF and UHF. And, although most of the broadcast antennas are across the Mississippi from Brusly and Plaquemine, there are some low power stations scattered around too. I live in the Watson area, so all the stations line up perfectly for me to my S/SW. I use a UHF and a VHF antenna on a mast in my attic. Being digital, you can combine their downloads (use a splitter installed backwards!) into one wire. Both antennas came from Newark Electronics. VHF: 30-2476 for $43, and for UHF: a 30-2431 for $45. Both are on a mast in my attic. If you are feeding multiple sets, you might need an amplified splitter.. Two items: in shopping, there is NO such thing as a digital antenna! Antennas are antennas. And those reception mileages are for optimum conditions that you never have, and for desert-like terrain that you don't have either.

Another must-do, the Musicians Hall of Fame. Permanently housed now in the 'bowl' of the Municipal Auditorium, it caters to Country, Rock and Roll, Blues... Most famous for housing the actual instruments that the big names have played on monster recordings through the years. I was surprised that the drum set that recorded thousands of songs (Hal Blaine) looked like it came from an old Sears catalog. Big place, worth 2 hours at least..

Am now in the 200k+ phase of my SECOND Dodge Ram 1500 Truck. The first was a 1998 Manual transmission. Had to replace the clutch at 170k and sold it to my son at 201k. No other issues with that vehicle. My current Ram is a 2011, bought after the flood from CarMax. Now cruising along at 205k, and again, no huge repair bills, nothing. I have nothing but accolades for the builds on these vehicles. Would certainly buy another.

A cousin will finely ground some Ritz crackers and add to her mix. Adds a great buttery, salty backflavor..

Donut Shop - Donuts, tamales, but a lady in Vidalia told me their best product might be their burgers. Big and Juicy.

Malt Shop-old fashioned drive up burger stand. Frito pies, that sort of thing. Cash only.

Across the river in Vidalia, The Cafe. Great breakfast spot.

Nearby in Ferriday (FER-i-dee) is the Delta Music Hall of Fame. Check their website for hours, as its kinda weird..

City Cemetery - Key in on the Turning Angel, and the Florence Ilene Ford grave. Worth an hour.

Natchez City Hall - check out the tombstone for 'Tripod, The Citys Kitty" Interesting backstory about 9 minutes in.

Tripod's Story

Thank you all so much for saving me money on a Monday! Ya'll are awesome.
Owned my small biz LLC for just over a year. Now I am being told to file an Beneficial Ownership Information Report (BOIR). At $140!! I never heard of this when signing up with the state. Is this legit? Many thanks...
Speed Queen: I've had a pair since the 2016 flood, and they've seen heavy use each week since. The only service to them has been one of the two circuit breakers that feed the dryer went out (not the dryer), and a circuit board in the washer had to be replaced last month. It might be kinky, but that solid metal THUNK when its transmission does its thing makes me think this combo will be with me for awhile.
