Having been to Mr. B's dozens and dozens of times, I can't think of anything done well at that restaurant. Nothing is horrible but nothing is good. It's all just average food that isn't cheap. I always think about the time when my friend and I overheard two beautiful Swedish girls asking the doorman at The Monteleone where they should go for dinner. The doorman told them to go to Mr. B's. My friend walked up and said: I cannot let two ladies as beautiful as you eat at such a disgusting restaurant. We ended up taking them to GW Fins and made some new Swedish friends.
This should be the dumbest fricking thing I read this week.

Charley G's has a really good gumbo, as does Don's. I recently tried the seafood gumbo from the Chimes and was surprised by how good it was.

Mr B’s mentioned above…last time I went (Covid times) I got the gumbo, and it was one of darkest I ever have.
Hard no for me.

The reason why is never a good at restaurants is. They make huge batches and take shortcuts to save time.
Meanwhile. Grammy spent half the day making her roux the perfect color. And hand assembled the entire dish.

City Cafe has a tasty seafood gumbo. Would be better if they had more shrimp and crab in it per serving but flavor is excellent

While I haven;t had all of them in the state, this is far and away the best gumbo I've ever had at a restaurant.

A good take out gumbo is a beautiful thing. In the early 90s I used to live off of cheap take out seafood gumbo from the original location of Ye Old College Inn. You'd pick it up from the back screen door to the kitchen and the cook would ladle it into a large container for you while chatting. Fed two of us.
I was hungry for gumbo after reading this thread. I recently moved my NOLA office to Mid City, so thought I'd sample some of the local options. Today I got a good sized bowl of sausage, chicken and shrimp gumbo from Broad & Banks Seafood. It was a light but spicy broth with generous portions of meat and shrimp. Only had a spoonful or so of rice in it. With a meat pie, it was about $10. Great bargain and very good.
On the list to try is Munch Factory, Neyow's, and Melba.

Red Bird Fried Chicken in Covington has some of the best I've had from a restaurant. It's outstanding.
