I judge based upon Mom’s homemade gumbo. Few restaurants get close.

However, New Orleans Food & Spirits in Covington, La is the best I have had.

Others are good (Deanie’s in Bucktown, Gumbo Shoppe in Metairie). But New Orleans Food & Spirits is consistently THE BEST.

I bet your mom's is great. My surprise excellent gumbo is at Phil's Oyster Bar in BR.

Herbsaint has the best restaurant gumbo in the state of Louisiana.

City Cafe has a tasty seafood gumbo. Would be better if they had more shrimp and crab in it per serving but flavor is excellent

Viola & Agnes (close to NASA)

Obviously this isn’t in N.O. but one of the best I’ve had at a restaurant.

I've never ordered gumbo in a restaurant because of my mother's gumbo. We knew my mom was losing her battle with dementia when her gumbo wasn't as good anymore. She couldn't remember the way she made it.

Never understood why people like Mr. B's.

Mark Twain Pizza makes a very good seafood gumbo.

This is not a dine-in restaurant, but Butcher Block's seafood gumbo is delicious.

Trenasse has a delicious Fowl Gumbo (different fowl depending on the time of year).

Having been to Mr. B's dozens and dozens of times, I can't think of anything done well at that restaurant. Nothing is horrible but nothing is good. It's all just average food that isn't cheap.

I always think about the time when my friend and I overheard two beautiful Swedish girls asking the doorman at The Monteleone where they should go for dinner. The doorman told them to go to Mr. B's.

My friend walked up and said: I cannot let two ladies as beautiful as you eat at such a disgusting restaurant.

We ended up taking them to GW Fins and made some new Swedish friends.

Yes, but what specifically don't you like about the gumbo? For a dark roux, restaurant style gumbo, I think it's excellent.

[I cannot let two ladies as beautiful as you eat at such a disgusting restaurant.]

Oddly incongruous commentary in order to make a point. But ok.

I’ve always enjoyed it.

Duck spring rolls, gumbo ya ya, sleeve of French bread, pork chop chased by pecan pie is one of my fave lineups in the city.

To each their own.

What’s the deal with this trend of making really dark gumbos? I’ve been to some restaurants that serve gumbo looking like motor oil. I grew up in the heart of cajun country and everyone’s gumbo was always brown like a pecan shell.

This thread has made me realize I think I’ve only ever eaten gumbo in a restaurant maybe two times …

We had Don’s gumbo for a work function (so not in the restaurant but still restaurant gumbo) and I’m trying to think of where I’ve eaten gumbo out … it’s got to be I’ve eaten it somewhere …

Spahrs has a really good gumbo and you can buy the base for it next door at 3 Piers for $10 for a half gallon. All you have to do is add the protein.

I don't think you understand the definition of the word incongruous.

You also enjoy egg salad sandwiches from 7/11.

To each their own.
