Wife is watching Food Network and Guys DD&D is on. He's highlighting Phil's in Baton Rouge. Not sure when it was filmed. Highlighted a cheesecake dish.

How is/was it? Is it still open? Worth hitting if I return to Baton Rouge for a Bama/LSU game?

Used to hit it up on Monday’s…

Think the last time I went it was 75 cent oysters and $1 feast - including GITM

The Baton Rouge episodes aired last spring (April/May). It's still open. Never eaten the cheesecake appetizer there, but it's probably similar to the same dish served at Ruffino's (I've eaten that version). Their food is generally good, standard seafood and po'boys/sandwiches.

Thanks. Is it in the combat zone, or decent part of town?

Decent part of town. Food is mediocre and overpriced. However, it is a Baton Rouge and an LSU institution.

Decent? One of the better parts of town. Exclude the country clubs there not a ton better.

Phil's is always solid.

A group of us from work go there for lunch frequently and it's mostly very good. They make their own fried pickles, which we always get as they're great. The Eggplant Owen is fantastic, as is the remoulade salad and the catfish poboy. The crawfish cheesecake is very rich but very tasty.

I'm not a fan of the Friday lunch special etoufee as it's with a white sauce, and the chicken and sausage gumbo is good but greasy. Those are personal tastes so ymmv.

Phil's is pretty great. Now I want some fried pickles.

Phil’s in an easy 5 minutes off the interstate.

Phil's has one of the better seafood gumbos in town. I try not to stray far off the raws and fried seafood. Attempts in the past have not gone well.

I'd go here for drinks and apps only, sitting at the bar. Entrees are very average at best.

2 minutes tops from the light at college. Cut through Albertsons PL and go in the back door. Don't tell me you go to Perkins and hang a right?

Their oysters are good. The crawfish spoonbread is amazing. I'd say overall the food is just pretty good. Good atmosphere, and big bar.

Elsies Plate n Pie
Cecilia
Chimes (north of Campus)
Jasmines on the bayou - opposite side of town than LSU but good food, boring atmosphere
Dempsey's - Same notes as Jasmines. Guy Fieri went here as well. Way better Poboys than phils in my opinion.

All of these restaurants are pretty good spots for some Louisiana food worth checking out.

I'll second Jasmine's. I lived in Shenandoah for awhile and we got takeout because, like you said, the atmosphere is boring. As far as the OP, Phil's is good. It's nostalgic for me. My dad and I used to meet at the one on government once a month for oysters and beer. I wish we could still do that.

It’s mediocre and really loud.
