I have never had one, but have been told by those who do that Don's Seafood on Airline makes a real good one.....

Thanks for the link. Interesting that the tree is called a Black Cherry Tree but the pic shows it produces both black and red cherries.

I think they get darker as they ripen.

Update because I know you care -
Ordered this drink at three different locations. No one could make it. So today I went out and bought bitters and Jim Beam.
A few dashes of bitters.
A little more than a shot of bourbon.
2 teaspoons of simple syrup.
1 tablespoon water.
Ice.
Stirred it a bit.
It's fricking delicious.

Glad you like it. My mother would ask you where the orange and cherry are, though.

I like it like this.
First : Put 1 cherry and some simple syrup or sugar in the glass - muddle cherry
Second : fill glass with ice and add angostura and orange bitters. 2 dashes each.
Third : Fill glass with bourbon and pour everything into shaker
Fourth :stir in shaker. ( not shake )
Fifth :add new ice to glass
Sixth :strain shaker into glass over new ice
Seventh :Garnish how you want (orange/cherry, etc)

I ordered one for the first time this weekend. The straw kept clogging up with orange pieces and I had to drink from the top down. I noticed that the top and bottom tasted completely different. I will have to give it another go...

Must not have been strained.

I've never really ordered cocktails out before, but I'll be honest, after watching Mad Men, I want to drink like Don Draper.
I'm right there with you. Ever since I saw him order an Old Fashioned, I've wanted to try it.

The way it should be. It should be bitter then sweeten up as you go. An old fashioned shouldn't be shaken or strained either, just a little stir.

Drink from the top or bottom?

you should drink old fashioneds because they're delicious, not because you're trying to emulate the chutzpah of a fictional character.
I didn't realize they had gotten popular because of a TV show. I just started seeing them offered more often as specials at some of the NOLA restaurants for lunch over the last 2 years.

It was sweeter on top and tasted watered down. I could taste the bitters on the bottom when I got a sip before the straw would clog up. Perhaps they made it different...

Sometimes they'll add a splash of water or soda water, which may have watered it down. I usually ask them not to.

This is how I do them:
Dissolve one sugar cube in water
Add 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
Add a few ice cubes
Cut a little bit of orange zest into/over the glass
Pour in whiskey
Add a cherry, maybe

A lot of people here seem to have a problem with that. In 28 years of living, I had never heard of the drink but thanks to the Wife Cheater, I now have a favorite drink.

In all honesty, I do find that absolutely amazing. Now, admittedly, I kind of grew up around cocktail culture. Just meaning that friends and family drank cocktails of all types.
I'm still wiping my eyes from the straw clogging up comment.
