possibly, but those bars are the ones i will not return to.

Rightfully so. I'm just stating a fact about some bars.

R2R told me about the billet smash (?) at the rusty nail that was their version of it. that was a damn fine drink

Bullet Smash is a great drink, it lends itself better during the summer then a traditional Old Fashioned. IMO.

ETA: R2R, best Old Fashioned? As long as you crave extra cherry flavoring. What do you use, Cherry Koolade?

wow that's a pretty lame reason to drink something.

I think it's pretty cool. Sometimes I try to emulate Clete Purcell. Clete Purcell is a big fat drunk bad sumbitch in many of James Lee Burke's novels. One of Clete's favorite lunches is a catfish poboy and 3 coldass draft Budweisers. Emulating him made me a big fan of catfish poboys and 3 coldass draft Budwiesers. I'm a better person for it.

i love an old fashion, but i have found many bars that either don't know what it is or just make a terrible one.

This. I really enjoy them but I don't order them at every bar. If it's a place known for cocktails, I'll give it a go. But if it's some dive or random bar, no thanks.

I don't know anything about the "cool" factor. I don't order things based on "coolness". I don't understand that aspect of the question.

Hmmm...well, this could be fun for you if you're at a place with good bartendars who make good cocktails. This cocktail can be excellent to bad. It's a risky order, as far as being good. If you're going to try it, request a call brand of bourbon rather than the house brand.

Do you drink any hard liquors at all that you like? Might be good to start with a drink made with one of those for your first run.

Ah. Good deal. You can probably tell by the atmosphere of the bar whether or not it's a good idea to order a cocktail that takes a little time to prepare. Don't order your drink first so you can guage the skill of the bartender while he/she is fixing the drinks of your coworkers.

I don't have a need to emulate other people, Mr. Balls. I've slopped pigs, you know.

I think an Old Fashioned was the first mixed drink I tasted. It was at a family Thanksgiving dinner at the Aunt's house. I was about 12. Tasted good. Very sweet.

Does anyone here know what a Cherry Bounce is? They gave me a taste of that and it was a burning sensation. Never heard of it since then.

Bartenders now mostly how to serve beers and shots and other crap that doesn't require knowledge. That is why there should be the cookbook for tenders behind the bar.

Why are you concerned with this? Drink what you like.

I agree. Drink what you like not what some actor pretends to do. He's actually drinking tea onset. What about smoking? All those guys smoke on that show. Right? Grab you a pack of Marlboro reds.

I know it involves Brandy and it's a very, very old drink.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I don't think I've ever had a bad Old Fashioned. Of course, I usually order them at your nicer cocktail bars or restaurants. I sure as shite wouldn't order one at a dive.

EDIT: And drink what you want to drink. Who gives a shite if something is cool or not? You know what truly is the coolest thing in the world? Not giving a frick about what people think.

That was a total compliment Gris. Ellie May was a babe. It's not like I called you Ms. Hathaway.

Order away...they never went out of style. I do see a lot more people drinking them now though since the rise of Mad Men.

I'm kind of worried about this. We're going to a local bar tonight to celebrate the end of the school year.

If the bar you are going to serves their drinks in plastic cups and sells buckets of beer, don't order one. If it's an upscale place with a real cocktail menu, try it out.
