So the only 2 differences between an Old Fashioned and a Sazerac is the absinthe and the presence of ice?

Cherry Bounce

My cajun grandma always kept a bottle in the kitchen cabinet for whenever she needed a nip. She'd let us taste it. I think one of her brothers who lived down the bayou used to make it.

I'm trying to remember back 50 years but I want to say that they put actual cherries into a bottle of Brandy let it go for a year or two. And when they uncorked it, it was a sure cure for sinus problems.

Yeah, you've got to find a wild Louisiana cherry tree and use those cherries, not the kind you find in stores in the summer time or florescent red in a jar.

I've never seen a cherry tree in La. I always assumed they made the bounce with cherries from a store.

Drink what you like not what some actor pretends to do. He's actually drinking tea onset. What about smoking? All those guys smoke on that show. Right? Grab you a pack of Marlboro reds.

They don't smoke real cigs on set either. They smoke herbal cigarettes.

Louisiana Sportsman Article on Wild Cherry Trees and cherry bounce

I'll stop hijacking after this...I love Old Fashioneds, by the way, especially with rye whiskey.

Nah, there are a lot of differences. Most of the time an OF is made with bourbon, not rye. Sazerac is made with rye. Nothing in muddled in a Sazerac, and I don't think there is any sugar added to the Sazerac, but I might be mistaken on that.

Is it still cool to order these?

Ask the barkeep if they´ve got Angostura. Very important ingredient.

I've been looking for a place that makes a good one in BR.

I once went to a Mexican restaurant and ordered one. This was my first. I got a cheap whiskey sprite and grenadine in a high ball. I was like wtf? They said it was correct.I gave him a look.

Don's Seafood makes a very good Old Fashioned. And they serve them in awesome glasses.
I've had a good one at Olives or Twist, Radio Bar and Jubans. Galatoire's in Baton Rouge has one with Merlot in it, that is surprisingly good.

A sazerac does have sugar.

Also, most traditional old fashioneds are made with Angostura bitters; a sazerac uses Peychaud's bitters. The Peychaud's is the defining feature of the sazerac. You can also use Herbsaint for the absinthe.

Same experience here. I'd rather make the drink at home and have it be the way I like it.

I can't tell you how many times I've gone to bars and they either don't know what it is or you have some over ambitious douche bartender that says "I make THE BEST old fashions! LOL" Then you wind up with a shitty drink that is way too sweet to be an old fashion. I didn't recall asking you to go all starbucks on my fricking cocktail you dirty whore.

God damn it

I frequent the qtr often and one of the things I like to do is ask the new "mixologist (hipster douche bartender)" if they can make a GOOD old fashioned or a GOOD sazerac.

The "eat shite and die" looks you'll get and the responses are great. You can tell right off the bat if the bartender is worth a shite. The real bartenders don't get offended and will let you decide once the drink is made. The hipster douche will immediately get offended and go on a spiel. its a fun game. try it.

Well here's the update:

I asked the bartender for an old fashioned, and she said, "Yeah, ummm, hmm. I think we may have the ingredients. What all do you like in yours?"

I said while already thinking about ordering something else, "I've never made one actually. Just wondering if you could make me one."

She said, "Maybe if we have the ingredients. Do you know what's in them?"

I said, "How about you just make me a whiskey sour."

She makes some abortion of a drink that tasted like Jim Beam and Mello Yellow.

I decide to down it since I was paying $5 for it and then ordered a Jameson neat.

frickin' cheap arse local Alabama bars!
