Is Oban 14 Year Old Scotch Good For Someone New To Scotch?

I’m doing it backwards, as I saw a bottle today and got it for a buddy who is expanding his bar offerings. Now I’m asking if it’s good.

I always liked it. Thought it was a quality bottle.

I think it might be a bit peat-y for a new Scotch drinker. A MacCallan or a Balvenie would be more toward the woody side and more palatable to Scotch newbies, especially if they were Bourbon drinkers before.

Generally blends are better for new Scotch drinkers. He will appreciate the Oban in a year or two. It's good. New Scotch drinkers probably won't get it.

I’ve got to disagree here. Start with the good stuff. I agree with the poster above you. Start with the Speyside single malts. They are not a peety or overpowering. They are still my go to.

Yes-ish
A better way to start someone on scotch is with a sherry cask finish.
Macallan 12yr Sherry is a great way to start someone out

Probably not the best…. But it’s a good quality bottle so it should be fine.

Oban 14 is good. It is really peaty though so you'll know if a heavy peat scotch is something he likes right away, lol.

It's fantastic... I think it might be a good "gateway" for someone new to Scotch.

I agree, but I would even say a 12 year is even better for someone new to scotch

Ive tried scotch repeatedly for years. The one that hooked me and made me not look at it a lightened whiskey... Ardbeg an AO
At first it was too much, I hated it. But it kept calling to me.
It's a beautiful whisky.

Oban is great. Look it takes several sessions to develop a taste for that kind of scotch. He wouldn't go out and buy it on his own. I think it's a good choice. Tell him to give it a few glasses before he decides if he likes it or not.

100%. All Obans are amazing.

Great gift and a good scotch . Unfortunately I just tested positive for covid and couldn't tell the difference in Oban and gasoline .

The only scotch I’ve ever enjoyed was a Glenmo Signet

Thanks for all the replies. My buddy is a bourbon drinker, so I told him to give it some time before he gives up on it.

I like Glen Morangie 14 Quinta Ruban. Total Wine has it for $48. A great value.
