Would you consider gumbo to be under the broad spectrum of soups or is it not a type of soup?

If you add potato salad, then it is an entree

Depends on who makes it. My sister-in-law makes a real soupy gumbo you could drink the broth-----not gravy----with a straw.

Two pisses and a fart and you're hungry again.

I make mine like a fairly thick stew and it sticks to your bones when eaten.

One could argue that a stew is also a soup

Roux makes it not a soup. Roux makes it a gumbo. People who make gumbo without a roux are making soup.

The failure in your question is in wording it as if soup is the dominant force that others are compared to. Soups are asking others if they are gumbo, not the other way around.

But roux goes into plenty of other dishes that aren't gumbo.

Gumbo is gumbo of course, but it is in the soup category to me. As are stews. If you can't eat it with a fork without compromising the bites (so, leaving the liquid behind), it is a soup to me. Even if it is thick, a fork doesn't work for gumbo, chili, etc.

All are soups/stews to me.

Stew for sure

A soup to me is one dimensional as far as the base liquid goes.

The base of a gumbo isn’t even a liquid.

Fair, but what about soups that are made by pureeing something solid and then only adding a small amount of liquid? Those don't start with liquid either, but they are soups.

Like roasted tomato soup. Or pureed vegetable soup. More liquid is added to gumbo than those, often times.

Soups can be cream based as well.

I think gumbo is technically a soup, but I wouldn't ever call it such.

I used to think of gumbo as a soup, but now I'm in camp stew. Usually stews have larger pieces or chunks than soups (check), are more apt to have a thicker for a base like a roux (check), and is served over a starch like potatoes or rice (check). Now it's not to say that soups can't have a thicker added to it like a cream-based soup, or be chunky like a potato soup, but generally speaking soups remain clear or have a liquid base.

I could be persuaded to see gumbos as a subsect of stews, but they aren't on the same level as soups or stews on the food family tree.
