re: Interesting Liquor Laws, State to State

When I used to live in Mississippi, not only could not buy beer in a liquor store, you couldn't even buy soft drinks.
On election days, you couldn't purchase beer, wine or liquor until after the polls closed.

In Tennessee there is no open container law, as long as the driver is not drinking.
Cities can still ban it by ordinance, but I think the maximum penalty is $50

In Utah the beer sold in grocery stores can only be 3.2% alcohol. You have to go to a state alcohol store to buy liquor, wine and stronger beer.

In SC, liquor stores are split in two. One side for liquor, the other side for beer and wine. You can carry your beer and wine to the liquor side to purchase, but you can't bring unpurchased liquor to the beer and wine side. Purchased liquor you can. And forget Sundays...

Minnesota only has 3.2% beer available in grocery stores and gas stations and no wine. A law allowing Sunday sales was just recently passed.

I could write a short novel on how backwards Alabama is in regards to liquor. Most from personal experience. It really is county to county. And some cities within dry counties have voted to go wet. I’m glad we can buy decent beer now but the state controlling the liquor sales is absurd. Yet we can’t have a lottery, legalize weed, and stuff like gas taxes get pushed through without input from the population.

So bar hopping in California is illegal?

Texas allows voting precincts to be dry. So there are areas in the Dallas city limits where you can't even buy beer at the convenience store. There was an area near me that was like that forever but they finally voted to allow beer & wine to be sold in that precinct.

Basically. If they can prove you drank (in this case, an empty solo cup that smells of booze), they can by law get fined and liquor license revoked if they let you in.

You can get higher ABV beers at taprooms now.
Also, if you order beer or a drink in a restaurant you have to have food with it.
In Oregon you have to buy liquor at the liquor store. In rural areas sometimes it's at a convenience store which is the only time you can buy beer and liquor in the same place. Eta....there is a time limit on sales as well.

I know this for fact...there is no store that can sell beer on Sundays between Ruston and Dry Prong along Hwy 167.

It wasn’t that long ago where I’m at in Louisiana that you couldn’t buy any alcohol on Sunday or after 10pm,
Made me learn to think ahead and plan my alcohol purchases.

My buddies dad attended Bama in the 40s and knew how to fly a plane. Flying booze in was the least risky way to get it into Tuscaloosa, so he was the man to know on campus. He drank Jim Beam all his life due to that being the main cargo on those flights.

Throw Oklahoma in the mix as well. 3.2 beer, no sales on election day. Some might have changed, but damn.
As Zappa mentioned Dry counties. In Lubbock you had to go outside the city limit to the "strip" to get alcohol. Talk about a mafia racket. It has since changed, but it was a right of passage.
First job was in the panhandle, Perryton, TX and we had to hit the state line for 3.2 beer in OK. Funny how the state lines up there have 1-2 beer joints there.

Went to school in Delaware. Bars closed at 1 a.m., and could not buy any alcohol on Sundays. You could, however, travel a few miles to Elkton, MD and buy all the liquor you wanted on Sundays.
Glad Louisiana treats adults like adults with regard to legal substances.

Tenner has some bullshite like that. I couldn't buy a 6 pack of bud and a pint of jack in the same store. I thought that was crazy. I don't remember the actual numbers but beer stores can't even sell beer over like 7% abv.

That was the same when I went to North Carolina. All these nice bars with no specials.

North Carolina is pretty bad...
