I was given a smoker from an old friend who didn’t want to mess with it anymore. I want to start smoking some meats. Can anyone recommend a book or a guide on how to smoke different types of meat?

Most everything is on the internet now though. type in the smoker in the search bar and you'll get some hits from forums like smokingmeats.com. Youtube has a ton of useful videos. Kosmos Q is another good resource and he cooks on several different kinds of smokers.

Search YouTube for the brand or type of smoker it is. Watch lots of videos. Start with pork butts because they're pretty foolproof.

Trail and error. The more you do it the better you get.

If you want an actual "book" in your hands, I'd recommend this one.

If not, YouTube is loaded with guys who can show you how to cook/smoke whatever on whatever kind of pit you could ever imagine. Like SB said above, Malcolm Reed is probably one of the most popular out there. Search HowToBBQRight on YouTube.

Malcolm Reed also has an app that’s pretty good. He has recipes for many different meats using different types of smokers.
I have a few books that were given as gifts when I got started . My favorite is Sam Jones Whole hog bbq book. I just got it and it’s very interesting.

I have this one and have made a few of his recipes. Raichlen is a long time bbq guru.

All things suggested are great. Carey Bringle (Peg Leg Porker) from Nashville just released BBQ for Dummies. While I havent reviewed it yet, he knows his shite and knows how to explain it so could be a good primer as well.

Steven Raichlen is great. He has zero ego, he isn’t trying to sell you on different and new recipes. He simply tells you how other people cook. If he doesn’t have their recipe, he makes one that’s close. I’m not sure if he has one great book for smoking though. His books that I have tell you how to cook on every type pit.

Favorite thing i've smoked from Raichlen's books is the Reuben.
And i love his shows he did for Project Smoke and Project Fire.
I could watch that all day.

Meathead has some good breakdowns, even gets scientific on why we do things and tests out some different methods head to head.
