Do you ask to give a quick smell of fish at your monger?

I've always thought this was common practice in the culinary world, and I've been doing it for decades now with various fish mongers, but recently ran into a "no" when I asked to give a 3lb salmon filet a whiff before I purchased it.
I'm not saying that they were trying to sell me poor quality fish, but I found it odd to be denied the request (I would understand if it were in the COVID days).
I've had no problems at this particular place, or anywhere else in the past, so maybe it was just the employee that day.
Is asking to smell fish an outlandish or unreasonable request to let your nose decide what's fresh before you purchase it?

My first indicator for freshness of fish in the market is to look at the eyes, then the smell test.
If the eyes are still pretty clear and not real clouded over I will pass on the smell test, but if the eyes are cloudy, I'm smelling them.

Not unreasonable at all to ask. Weird response.

I always ask to smell for freshness. Only time I was ever denied was during Covid. Learned this the hard way.

What's the hard way? They said "no, due to COVID"and you said "ok, understood"?

I always smell the fish.. especially salmon, because it's wild and you don't know how long it's been defrosted, etc.
If I'm not allowed to smell the fish, I'd just say, "Thanks.. I'll pass."

No. I don’t want to buy a piece of fish that others may have sniffed on and handled.

not unreasonable to me. i hope that was just a case of a new inexperienced employee.
curious,, did you buy the fish after all?

I don't think the fishmonger just hands the fish to various people to smell. And what does "sniffing on" matter if you're going to cook it?

How close are we talkin' when sniffin them fish? Do you let your mustache graze it so you can get a few extra sniffs that stayed in your hair after you hand the fish back?

I do ask.
Years ago in Los Angeles I asked the fish monger at our local grocery store to allow me to smell the piece of fish I had selected before he wrapped it up. He handed it to me on a piece of butcher's paper. I smelled it.
Me: It smells fishy.
Him: (shrugging his shoulders) It's fish.
I started buying my fish elsewhere.

What I meant was I learned the hard way to ask to smell for freshness. There was a time in the past when I didn’t ask to smell and got home and it smelled like arse. Ended up throwing it away.

The texture is a great gauge. More the no slime level. Ask where it’s coming from too. Salmon is all over they place in how the individual countries harvest and process. Not a big salmon eater myself ,but the stuff we have gotten from the Fauklin Islands has been really good quality. Don’t watch what they do to the whales once a year though. Y’all are incredibly fortunate to be close to the gulf and truly fresh fish.

They didn't want you to smell the bleach solution they just sprayed on it. Had it been an hour later, they would've let you smell it.
